Default Periodic PCM Updates

Does Lexus issue periodic PCM updates for drivability improvements? I know a lot of other makes, especially GM will issue PCM updates throughout the life of a vehicle. When you take it in for service, they will check for updates and reflash the computer. As technologically advanced as these cars are, you would think the software engineers would be able to make a few tweaks here and there to squeeze out a little more performance in the algorithms as time goes by.

like bios and firmware update/upgrade for computer equipments, change is necessary only if something is being fixed or improved--so yes, if there's a problem that can be fixed via PCM update, they would do so. For example, Lexus flashed the PCM on my 04 RX to make the transmission smoother--it only made a nominal difference. Unfortunately, sometimes a fix or improvement is only possible with hardware revision. I don't forsee Lexus flashing the PCM to improve performance, unless the actural horsepower is less than advertised, like some Mazda and Mustang. By the way, when there is such an update, Lexus won't notify you unless it's safety-related, or if there is a recall. On my RX's transmission, they only did it because my wife mentioned to the tech during a routine service that the 05 RX loaner shifted much more smoothly; and then the tech said he could reflash the PCM. If Lexus can do something to squeeze more hp out of the engine, it would reserve it for subsequent model update.

Yep, seems logical. I'm used to seeing a Technical Service Bulletin thread on most car forums, but with the reliability of these cars, I guess they are not as prevalent.

Mini Cooper is the king of PCM/ECU changes. Our 2005 started on version 31 in March of 2005. By October we were on version 43 before it was bought back as a lemon.

That was a rediculous example but they do happen. Not uncommon for the dealer to flash a new update while in for service.
