Default PWR uses more gas.....

but upshifts later and downshifts earlier. Most drivers when paddle shifting wait too long to shift and lose acceleration just as rominl said. The paddles can downshift on command and hold a gear too so they are good for cornering. I was impressed to see an IS350 turning 13.3 to 13.5's in the quarter mile. I think he was using fully automatic shifts.

I'm wondering if someone can confirm this as I believe I'm correct but want to be sure.....

In S mode you control what gear you are in UNLESS:

1) you want to downshift too early and will put the revs into redline the car won't shift

2) if the car is floored and you try to upshift early (for ex. @ 5000rpm) the car won't as if it's floored it will automatically take it to redline.

I KNOW #1 is correct but have only floored the car twice so not sure if #2 is true all the time.

1 is correct, and so is 2 i believe

keep in mind about the definition of those numbers. it is NOT saying the gear you are in, i believe it is saying the TOP gear you can possibly in. that means you can put it in manual mode and keep it in 4 all day long. but every time you are at the stop light and start rolling the car, it starts in 1st.

otherwise starting at 4, that's kinda retarded

Can anyone confirm my question?

If the car is floored will it automatically take it to redline regardless if you paddle shift up or not?

Why don't you just go find out? Put your foot in the carpet and click the right paddle. Let us know...

I'd love to but I'm at work and trying to solve an argument. Then all my driving after work will be in rush hour and I'd hit the car in front of me before I got to redline.

Just to clarify my question, I know you can bounce off the rev-limiter but I'm hearing if it's floored you can't - this doesn't make sense to me.

like i said, when you press on the pedal to "upshift", you don't really upshift the gear. you are just stating the highest gear you can be in. so say you are flooring hard from stop (1st gear) but then you click twice to put it in 3, that doesn't mean the car will go to 3 immediately. it will still redline in 1st and 2nd before it hits 3

that's how it works in my gs400, and unless it's changed (doesn't seem like so from the other posts i read) it should be the same

I keep forgetting about that...

So to answer your question, basically it depends on what gear selection you've allowed to the trans at the time you put your foot to the floor. For example:

- you've selected 3rd gear. You floor it... if the car decides to leave the tranny in 3rd gear, based on your current RPM and speed, then when you hit redliine it'll bounce off the limiter until you slow down or allow the car to upshift to 4th by clicking the right paddle.

- you've selected 1st gear. You floor it. You can bounce it off the limiter, upshift, bounce it off the limiter, etc. all the way through the gears
