Default OEM IS250 tire wear?

Hi everyone,

I am failry new to this board and just purchased a new IS250 rwd SGM auto, blk leather & prem. pckg.. It arrives sometime in April(got $2200 off sticker). I have been reading and searching through quite a few posts looking into the tire life with the 17" all seasons. Supposedly Lexus is saying they're only good for 20k? Does this seem accurate or will the average driver (not racer) get closer to 40k or so? I think 20k seems extremely early to have to replace all season tires, but then again I don't know. I can see the 18" summer only tires wearing this quickly but not these. Also, the brake pads wearing at 20K too? Again, it seems too soon for that much wear. I have had a 2000 & 2003 Toyota 4Runner that had good brakes/tires left even after 45k. Anyone have any thoughts, or is Lexus just pretecting themselves against the speedracers out there that fly around corners and do excessive breaking.

Let me know your thoughts.

Thanks,
Brandon

The stock 17" wheels wear Bridgestone RE92's. They should be good for 20-40k miles, depending in large part on how much attention you pay to inflation and how you drive.

The set on my WRX lasted 40k miles and would have gone longer. Keep in mind the Lexus weighs a good bit more though.

Apparentlyl there are two factory options. I'd thought they all came with RE92's.

Anyway, the Dunlops have a similar treadwear rating as the RE92's, so in theory they should last about as long.

whenever you have to get new tires DO NOT GET BRIDGESTONE RE92s again, those tires are just unbelievably bad. For reference RE92s came on my 2000 prelude as OE, they lasted around 25-28k, as the the tread wore low they started becoming extremely unsafe, traction is lost on these so easily when the tires are getting close to 2/32"

if you want to get a good laugh, read reviews about the RE92s here from tirerack:
Bridgestone RE92 Review

people are reporting they suck *** in icy conditions even tho they are all seasons so id be careful

tirerack is actually listening Bridgestone RE050 as well as the dunlops and RE92s as OE for IS250 RWD if you want to do a tire search for it, 050 and dunlops are summer tires so i bet the southern states, cali, etc get them, lucky them they dont have to deal with RE92s

I think 20k miles would be pushing it. The Bridgestone RE92s have a treadwear rating of just 160, which is pretty low. The lower the rating the faster they wear out. If you drive conservatively (and who does that with this car!), they might last a little longer. Tire Rack has a good discussion of this type of information.

One of the most common complaints I hear from people driving everything from Camrys and Siennas to ISs and SCs is that they had to replace their tires X times over the course of their leases...

Toyota as a corporation has a history of using softer compound tires for more compliant ride and better grip. However this has lead to complaints about tire life, so from what I understand the tire life listed in the manuals and brochures notes a reduced tread life to cover Toyota, so people don't come back and say "it didn't last like you promised". Depends on how you drive and where, I got 26,000 out of my Potenzas on the Matrix but only 18,000 on my Supra with the same tires.

RE92s were crap. They were the OEM on my Solara and only lasted about 22K miles (at 1/32 - 2/32 left) and started to lose traction around 15k (probably 4-5/32 left). The treadwear rating is at a horrid 160... while most aftermarket tires are 320 at the worst all the way up to 480 for 17" wheels.

www.1010tires.com has a few good reviews on tires. That's where I researched before purchasing replacements. Definitely a great site.

Thanks fpr the replies so far. I will be purchasing some blizzaks for the WI winters anyway, so that will prolong the crappy OEMS for a good 2 yrs or so. I was researching the recommended winter setups and I currently have the Blizzak ws-50's(2000 328ci) and they work great now. Does anyone know if I can use 16'' rims on 205/55 tires(approx) on the Lexus? I would like to save money and not go with the 17" winter setup?

Has anyone had to sell a used winter tire/wheel package with 16" blizzaks on 5 spoke tirerack rims? I am curious what I could sell the ones on the soon to be sold BMW for? They have about 9-10k on them. Any help would be great.

Don't hate me, but one more question Does it pay to buy a new winter setup now(end of year closeouts maybe) or wait till next fall? If I can save a few $ I would buy them this year yet.

Thanks guys,
Brandon

Not quite. There are a lot of variations of the RE92, and some have 160 treadwear ratings while others have 360's.

That's right. The ones that came on my IS 250, and given the sizes of the tires for the vehicle perhaps come on all of them, have a treadwear rating of 160. I'll be happy if I get 20k miles out of them and then can replace them with something of higher quality and performance ability.

Guys
Friend of mine just got an IS250 AWD. The first one had a problem after two days so they gave her a new one!

She says the ride on the new one is terrible compared to the old one - and the steering is almost too jumpy.

Turns out the old car had the Bridgestones and the new one has the Dunlops.

JoesIS250 - do you notice a difference between your car and your brothers? Are both tires all season?

Thanks in advance!
