[QUOTE=Langdell]Actually, my manual says 651 miles as the break-in period. (As someone else posted here a while back, 651 mi.=1,000 km, so the number is not as random as it sounds.)

@ page number?

in SG, we have recommended "run in" period of 1000km too...& our warranty covers 1000Km, 5000Km, 10000Km free servicing with engine oil change & overall inspection/checks.

Anyway, there's little chance to hit the REDline as expressways speed limit in SG is 90Km/hr, & city/street driving is ranging from 50~70km/hr....SNAIL pace....
the IS250 couldnt even stretch its legs....

AGAIN, this entire car comes ready to go when you buy it. Regardless of what the manual says, new cars today need no such breaking in. Go ask your toyota engineers.

Agree.

My salesperson, and a bud who was a toyota master tech have all told me to drive it on the hard side whenever safe and possible during break-in.

My friend got an M3 the day before I got my IS350 (obviously trying to scoreboard me). There is a huge sticker in the window with the "breaking in" requirements. Everything from speed to RPM's to breaking. Sucks to be him, but after 1000 miles or so, he'll certainly have the faster car.

people have beaten the m3 driving an is350 before.. its not obviously the faster car, its driver dependent.

Most legitimate Toyota engineers cannot even speak good english. Who are these "toyota engineers" you speak of that we need to go ask? I hope you aren't talking about the ones down at the local "car dealership" that sells cars lol. You live in CA, maybe you're talking about the folks at HQ?

In this case, I believe you should follow the manual regardless if it is the truth or not because it can't hurt. But I guess we have no idea who wrote and reviewed that manual before it was printed either.

How about startup in the morning? No warm up, just start and go? I always wait until RPM goes down, about 10 or 15 seconds.

I broke in my previous cars and never had much of a problem with any of them... so I always follow breakin guidelines. With new cars I just am careful anyway, because im afraid of hurting it, even if I know it wont be hurt, the feeling is kind of instinctual.

I also wait about 15-30 seconds, because I'm usually getting settled in anyway. I dont wait any more then that because modern cars dont need to be warmed up (so I was told). But I do try to drive easy until I'm halfway to operating temp.

Wink

Do not drive at excessively high speeds? Humm Doing 80 in the IS is like going 50 in a normal car. So just what should we consider "excessive?"
