Engine ticking - IS250 RWD MT
I recieved my IS250 MT on Friday and have a question. When I listen to the engine from outside the car, I hear a slight ticking noice while ideling. Is this characteristic of the car? I listened to two cars at the dealer and they both did it.
I can't hear anything from the cabin and the thing drives perfectly. I'm not sure if it's detonation problems from the crappy gas the dear put in it or what.
Should I be worried?

I think it may well be just characteristic of the car because, from what you describe, my IS350 makes the same sound. My girlfriend was the first one to notice it. The other day she asked me if I had checked the oil level because she noticed the ticking noise when I was idling in a parking lot and she was standing outside the car. I was like, I should hope this Toyota engine is not burning oil already! I've only had my car about a month and she has just about 1,200 miles on her. And I have filled the tank with only premium, name brand gas. I did check the oil later--fine, as expected. The engine runs smooth as silk, so I'm satisfied that it's just how it's supposed to sound. Maybe it has something to do with the VVT-i technology.

no worries - it's completely normal... though i had the same concern when i first picked up my car cuz this is the only car i've had that makes that sound. i believe this has been discussed before on this board too.

From Road & Track article:
A trained ear can tell this V-6 is direct injected via the slight clicking sounds it makes at idle. Inside the car, however, the engine is nigh impossible to hear, barring wide-open-throttle conditions when the exhaust takes on a slightly aggressive character. At idle, our sound meter shows the IS to be especially silent, nearly as quiet inside as its LS 430 brethren.

Been discussed many many times in the past.
It is the Direct Fuel Injectors.
Doesn't really bother me. You can't hear it when you are inside. Well....not really.
Supposely, someone said if you remove most of the engine cover. It gets louder!

As mentioned its the sound fromt he direct injection injectors, the sound is actually not a mechanical sound but rather the sound of the electronics that run the injectors.
