Default To drill or not to drill for aftermarket HIDs?

Hi All,

For those who have installed aftermarket HIDs can you please answer the poll? Thanks! Originally I thought drilling a hole and using the grommet was the best idea but I just saw a post saying he had better experience not drilling a hole in the dust cover.

Thanks,
TJ

Yes please let us know if you have an HID KIT with no Groumets...

And if you did anything to help deter condensation.

Please tell me how you would fit the aftermarket HIDs bulbs w/out drilling the holes on the cover?? I drill mines with the rubber grommet protection. Did not experience condensation.

I installed my kit with drilling last night. Took me about 3 hours. what a PITA. in the 3000, it took me about 30 minutes. There is no space around the engine bay for the HID

Default Needless to say....

I drilled mine as you all have seen on my DIY install thread. I chose to drill thinking "how much could those covers possibly be from lexus as a replacement part if I ever decide to remove the HID from the car" I figure they are AT MOST $20.....so im not worried about drilling. I wanted to make sure I get NO condensation....which I dont....

i believe some people just put the wires at the bottom or side of the cover and then close the cover on top of the wires.

Thanks for everyone who voted!

it doesnt matter if you drill or not, not having the dust covers on will not cause condensation..........its just how the bulb fits, when i first put on my hid's i had really bad condensation and spoke to someone on this site, i forget his name but he didnt even have his dust covers on and he had no condensation...........so i returned my bulbs and got new ones, when i re-installed them, they fitted alot better and all my condensation was gone.

i didn't drill anything when i first put on my hid kit. i left the covers off for few months and i had no problems but i just felt like putting the caps on so i drilled a hole w/o a grommet (because i didnt' get one) so its technically still exposed w/o any issues. my hid fogs dont' have any condesation issues either

Wow i thought all IS350 comes with HID... As far as condensation it will never be a problem unless for some reason a water gets inside the headlight.
I did a custom bi-xenon for my C Class and never really finish the back part and left open for a year and never had any condensation even on a rainy day

Condensation may only be a problem with more humid area's. If the air is dry, the water should evaporate.

I initially drilled in the dust covers and experienced condensation. I then taped them up using electrical tape and purchased new ones.

Since then, I ran the wires from the Xenonking.com kit under the dust cover (ran the wires under the front of the dust cover where the metal clip is - tight fit) and placed the cap over it. I then placed several pieces of electrical tape along the sides and the bottom of the dust cap (have to feel since you cannot see the bottom of the dust cap) and no problems yet. I have taken the car through (3) car washes and (2) heavy rains while driving. No condensation...

Teracon.
Did you use a grommet when you drilled... and who made your kit? When I did my install, I didnt use any RTV, but the grommet was pretty tight, so I hope that it works well

Those of you who used the grommet, did you also use silicon to seal it? I didnt, I am wondering if I should have. THe actualy grommet is really tight, but I wonder about the wires that go though it.
