The high end OEM systems such as the ML, are designed and engineered with the car's acoustics in mind. The sound is "just right" and "very well balanced". Besides the SURROUND SOUND ML system in the IS and GS are simply astounding (very much similar in audio quality and fidelity, to the DVD-Audio SURROUND SOUND systems in the Acura TL and RL).
....of course it also depends on your taste in music. If you primarily listen to Rap and the like, then an aftermarket system will be just fine. However, if it is important for the "fine details" of instruments to be "heard" and "felt" then the OEM ML will blow an aftermarket system out of the water.

I listen to all kinds of music from classical to rap to rock and the ML is good but still not as good as aftermarket. There are reasons why there are car stereo competitions and there are no ML systems wining those events. And I am not talking about big bass competitions either.

[....Of course, if you're LOADED and don't want the hassle, then it's a different story.[/QUOTE]
Nope - I'm not loaded - just comfortable - I had a similar situation in '04 - I had an '02 M3 - tried trading it in on a new '04 M3 - stealer offered me 34k - I found a buyer for 39.5k, had the deal done thru' the dealer and still got my sales tax credit.
I take this as a lessons learnt to myself - rather wait and get what you want - or it will burn the back pocket!
