(d) Notwithstanding subdivision (a), clear, colorless, and transparent material may be installed, affixed, or applied to the front side windows, located to the immediate left and right of the front seat if the following conditions are met:

(1) The material has a minimum visible light transmittance of 88 percent.

It goes on to talk about some Federal Standards for Glazing that quotes the 70%. But Line 1 still applies first. 88 Percent.

Some people have gotten away with 35 Percent, but everyone I know that has tried, has had to take it off. The Roseville Police in particular are very 'No Tolerance' to front windows tinted. Regardless of driving habits.

I know it would look better with tinting on the front side windows, but it's not worth the legal hassles.
Yeah, the material itself must be 88%, but after it's applied on the windows, the total light transmittance (window + tint) is 70% and must meet the AS-14 glazing requirement.

Just want to clarify and please let me know if i am wrong again (my English is bad ).

Probably correct Who knows, but I don't want to have to find out.

Default This might help...

http://www.chp.ca.gov/html/streetlegal.html

http://www.dmv.ca.gov/pubs/vctop/d12/vc26708.htm

I'm looking into tinting front windshield 50% & front side windows 40% & back side windows & rear window 20%

However, i'm still debating if i want to clean look, all around the same...

... thinking about it

It looks so much meaner with the tint, but you def need to do that front window!, even if it's
just at least a 35% tint..

Not slamming your tint job, but I have to agree the dark in the rear and lighter in front sorta "chops up" the look of the car. Kinda like painting the rear quarter panel a darker color or something.

But more important to me is that - in the driver's seat - I NEED some sun protection! I mean, I don't have anyone in the backseat I need to hide from view or anything, and tint here in the Southwest is mainly for cutting down on heat and the frying effects of the sun beating in through those windows. Having to leave the fronts essentially stock just defeats the purpose IMO.

Makes you wonder how much free time these cops have on their hands to be able
to stress how dark someone's windows are.. They probably should cut back on the number
of police in some of these smaller towns

I personally like the look. Well done.

I doubt anyone will ever confuse your IS with a limo with or without tinting so I would not worry about that. This way, you can also be legal as you travel from state to state.

I got a ticket years back when we lived in San Diego for having my front windows tinted. I was given a "fix it ticket" of $10 and then had to have the windows inspected by any SDPD officer. We waited outside the SDPD academy off I-15 and Carroll Canyon Road and grabbed the first officer we all saw. It was funny because this one motorcycle officer had 4 of us waiting in a line with our fix it tickets to have signed.

looks great, but let me ask you a question, why 18? why not a nice round numer like 20 or 10 or, although not as round, 15?

This is SunTek Carbon Series and they make it in (I believe) 5 Perc Limo, 18 Perc, and 35 Perc.

I didn't want Limo 5, and I didn't want it as light as 35 Perc. I really wanted 20 Perc, like I had on my Volvo. They said "Well we have 5 / 18 / 35" so I said, 18 it is.

To those that don't like the split look, I notice you all aren't from California, consider yourself lucky that your State allows it. I wish mine did!

I've gotten a lot of good comments on it driving around town. From the back it just looks so much more aggressive with a nice dark tint. I really am enjoying this car!! Talked to a guy who had no tint and he was very impressed with the difference in look side by side.

My main point in posting is to hopefully make Tinting Percent questions easier to decide for others based on what they see as options. So I threw mine up so you could see what SunTek 18Perc looks like.

Enjoy your rides!
