Default Consumer Reports rates Lexus IS 250 "excellent" in sporty sedan test

April 24, 2006

Yonkers, New York - The Lexus IS 250 has achieved an "excellent" overall score in Consumer Reports' test of six sports sedans for its May issue. The IS 250 is now ranked fourth overall among 18 sports sedans, behind the Acura TL, Volkswagen Passat and Honda Accord.

Among the six tested, the BMW 325i and Audi A4 were virtually tied with "very good" overall ratings, while the Cadillac CTS and Mercedes-Benz C230 finished with "very good" scores but below the BMW and Audi. The Saab 9-3 also received "very good", but finished 16th overall among the 18 sedans tested.

"The IS 250 outscored its competitors based on its combination of refinement, interior craftsmanship, easy-to-use controls, and competent performance," said David Champion, senior director of Consumer Reports' Auto Test Center in East Haddam, Connecticut. "Although the IS tested very well, it lacks the sporty personality of the other cars in this group."

Three of the six sedans tested - the IS 250, Audi A4 and Cadillac CTS - are "recommended" by Consumer Reports. The magazine does not have reliability data yet for the redesigned 3 Series, while the C230 has rated "worse than average" for reliability, and the 9-3 "much worse than average". To be recommended, a vehicle must perform well in Consumer Reports' tests, have at least average predicted reliability based on the magazine's survey of its subscribers, and perform at least adequately if crash-tested or included in a government rollover test.
