One of the federally mandated emissions tests on all cars manufactured since the 1996 model year is an evaporative emissions pressure test. It runs at least once during every drive cycle, and if I recall correctly, three consecutive failures will illuminate the check engine light.

I wouldn't be surprised if your problem was a loose gas cap and not a defective one, but since it's under warranty, I suppose it doesn't matter.

I have had something similar happen to me a couple of times in my GS. My Lexus tech told me it is their number one "panic call" and is often caused by the gas cap not being put on tight enough. The system is pressurized and apparently if you don't tighten the gas cap enough it doesn't pressurizse properly. Then you get the Check Engine and VSC lights.

Normally when I take the gas cap off their is a whoosh sound as it the pressure vents. The two times I had the Check Engine and VSC lights come on their wasn't any pressure when I removed the cap. From now on, I twist it until it clicks several times (> 3) to make sure the cap is on good and tight.

Hope this helps
