Default Radar assist cruise control

Hi all, does the radar assist cruise control on the IS allow the car go all the way down to a full stop if the car in front of you does so? Thanks.

I have the option on my 350. It does not bring the car down to a full stop. It makes the driver assume responsibilty at around 30-35 MPH. (If I remember correctly). The car beeps repeatedly and in effect is saying "I can do no more, you MUST now resume command". If the driver does not take over it will "be all over".

I love the option although it was not by any means a "give-away".

I had a question about the radar/laser cruise control. If you have a radar detector will the cruise control set it off?

My guess would be that it won't set your radar detector off. If it was on the same frequency as police radar, it could be used as a jammer.

LOL it puts out nowhere near what could be used as a jammer.

Anyone with a V1 will attest to Infiniti FX35s and FX45s setting off the laser alert...as do Chevy Trailblazer LED 3rd brake lights. Laser and RADAR are obviously different animals, but detectors do pick up assisted cruise control devices among other things.

Two police cars sitting in median clocking traffic don't jam each other. There might be some minor interference but police radar is a lot smarter these days.

It kind of makes me wonder why a passenger isn't allowed to input navigation commands while the vehicle is in motion, yet they offer an active cruise feature which shuts itself off at those speeds. Even more interesting, is the fact that most cruise control systems don't activate in that range of speed anyway, so as to prevent accidents at lesser city speeds.

They don't interfere because the beams are so narrow. I'm not sure, but I think the frequencies are nowhere near the police RADAR freqs or the FCC would have major heartburn (not to mention the cops).
My dealer told me that the RADAR cruise control was not available. WTF????
Now I'm pissed.

Does anyone know if it can be added aftermarket?

The millimeter-wave radar used in PCS/Radar Cruise Control on the 2IS is at 76.5GHz. (Devices used in this frequency are required to file for FCC licenses).

The highest frequency used in North America for traffic radar is in the Ka-band. 33.4GHz to 36.0GHz in 13 200MHz/ch's. (Only one Ka-Band gun is FCC approved to be used in the 35.2GHz to 36.0GHz range and that's the "Stalker" traffic radar gun which is technically outside the 'Super Wideband Ka-Band" but I digress...)

So the answer is "No." PCS won't set off radar-detectors and off the top of my head, none of the harmonics of a 76.5GHz if they're using a heterodyne receiver falls into either the X, K and Ka-bands of traffic radar.

That's your EE lesson for today.

Cheers,
Kermee

I've had one scotch too many to wrap my head around what you just said, but if it's true I'm elated that Lex-yota decided to use this system in the IS instead of the laser contraption Infiniti uses. False laser alerts on a V1 suuuuuuuck. Especially every 2 seconds if they're behind you on the interstate.

You are right. The same goes for me with the The older Toyota Adaptive Laser Cruise systems. These are available in the Sienna, LS430, RX330/350, and new Avalon.
