I've had a few of my cars do that. It was usually the first time I took it wide open after a new reprogrammed PCM. But I'm guessing the computer had to learn that high RPM shift point.

Stranger things have happened. I have no doubt it happened as you describe. I've had at least two instances where, when switching from D to S, it shifts to 3rd gear instead of 4th as it's supposed to. Both times were while stopped at the light. Both times were also after running the car pretty hard. I think the shift programming does have a few idiosyncracies.

This happened to me a few times. Once I put it in D thinking it would shift to 4th. Then I manually shifted down thinking it would go to 3rd and I gunned it only to hit the limiter because it actually down shifted to 3rd the first time and so I was gunning it on 2nd.

Take a closer look at your manual. It clearly states that when shifting to S mode, the transmission will select 4th gear, UNLESS the AI shift has functioned recently. What I take that to mean is if you've been hammering the car, it will select 3rd rather than 4th if it feels the need.
