Default Winter beater car?

How many of you have a winter beater car (obviously for those who need one)?

As I live in NY, I'm not sure whether to get a beater or just another set of rims with all-seasons.

For those who have beaters, how does the insurance coverage work for those few months you use the car? What is your approximate cost?

For those who put all seasons on another set of rims, did you have to make adjustments for the nav and tire pressure sensors? According to the drivers manual, when changing tires, consider the affect it may have on both those items.

Sorry for all the questions. Appreciate any answers!

I will not take my IS 350 out in rain or snow. For that matter, I leave it in the garage on hot sunny days when i know it will sit and bake in a parking lot. I have a '96 Acura TL that I use that runs just fine. Insurance cost is about $500 here in NJ for a full year.

Generally, adding a 2nd car shouldn't add *that* much to your insurance... just make sure the beater is set as your "primary" vehicle and the Lexus as secondary, keep insurance on both year round... I think when I added my Jeep it added like $200 to the yearly cost and $50 for my bike..

If you are doing two sets of tires, why use all seasons? Use a dedicated winter snow tire. I put on a set of Pirelli Snow Sport 240 tires, and they did just fine last year. Since they were stock size on the stock rims, nav calibration and tire pressure weren't an issue for me.

I don't have a winter beater, but I have a Scion tC that I use whenever it's windy, or if I need to drive and/or park in a bad area. (Downtown Los Angeles, etc.)
