Hey everyone,

My 2006 IS250 is approaching 4k and I will be taking it in next week for its first complimentary oil change. My question to all of you (Not to start a synthetic vs reg. oil debate) is that I want to use synthetic and they are saying the warranty will be fine at a 10k oil change interval with the mobil 1 oil they would use. The price is around $100 for the next change. What do you guys think? I dont want to have to mess around with doing it myself. But if you all think its easy enough to do on our own ,I may consider it using AMS oil 100% synthetic. But, will the warranty still be valid being its not been taken to the dealer and I'm sure the manual states every 5k?

Just a thought for anybody that can comment on this.

Do you have a local Toyota dealer, they should have the filters, etc. and probably will be significantly cheaper. I haven't had my first service yet, but, this is what I may do. For me, the Lexus dealer will pick up my car and leave me a loaner, whereas, I have to take my car to the Toyota dealer and wait on it. It may be worth it to pay for the hassle-free factor

Your warranty will not be voided if you don't use the dealer for oil changes as long as you use an oil that meets or exceeds the manuf. specs. and keep a record of your fluid changes.

Casey - I have thought about the toyota dealer idea, do they also offer synthetic, how much you think?

Thanks for the link. So if the synthetic oil recommends a 10k interval or whatever, then the warranty is still valid then correct?

I just called my Toyota dealer (I have a 2006 4runner) and they said $70 for a synthetic change on the IS 250? $30 cheaper, huh? Might be worth it to save the extra $30.

Another thought,

If someone were to bring the synthetic oil you wanted to use, would the toyota/lexus dealer use it and if so, would they charge the normal oil change rate for basic oil? Any experience with this scenario before I call to ask?

My buddy has a new Benz and they use Mobil 1 from the factory their manual recommends that they change oil every 13,000 miles, so 100 bucks give or take is not a bad amount to pay once a year. IMO

The Toyota dealer locally offers quick oil changes if schedules in advance...drive through and don't even get out of your car.

If I can bring my own syntehtic in to the toyota dealer, in my opinion this might be the most cost effective for me. I was reading that Amsoil is better overall versus Mobil 1, any thoughts?

At around 4600 miles a reminder appears. After the 5000 mile oil change the dealer must have reset it.

If you don't have the dealer change oil at the 10,000 mile interval will the reminder appear each time you start the car?

Anyone know how to reset it?

To reset the remider do the following:

1. Turn the engine switch OFF

2. While pressing the trip meter reset **** (-->P.100), set the engine switch to the IG-ON mode. Continue to press and hold the **** until the trip meter displays 000000

BTW my Lexus dealer wanted $70 for a regular oil change without synthetic oil.
Get it done at a Toyota dealer if you don't want to do it yourself.

Which is exactly why I would not buy a used mercedes or just about any other used car. Think about it. Your oil heats up, cools down everytime you start /stop the motor. Longer duration trips are better for oil but most trips are 10 miles or less. It can only suspend particles, absorb moisture & unburned foul that may sneak by the rings, for a finite amount of time. That and the heat cycling is what makes the oil contaminated, (some people believe the cotton filters let more dirt particles into you oil).
4k is plenty long or when the seasons change, which ever comes first., I plan on keeping my IS 350 a long time. Filters and oil are cheap and the IS350 is one of the easiest cars I have had the pleasure of changing.

Casey, I told you that you could bring your IS up here and we can change the oil when you need it. SWVA IS club has its privileges.

I'll have to take you up on that sometime, since I only have 500 miles, it's going to be awhile. I'm sportin' chrome 18" oem's now.

My local Toyota dealer will let you bring your own oil and filter (if it's Toyota brand filter) I've never asked if they supply synthetic - it may vary from dealer to dealer whether they let you do this. An oil change, level fluids and tire rotation is $39.95 at my Toyota dealer.
