I personally would probably use the cupholder as well. I just got a new Razr yesterday and had it in my gym bag in the trunk, and it worked flawlessly.
Wow, what a hot topic of interest If I'm just carrying the phone, wallet and fob I put the phone in the console cupholder, wallet in the console and leave the fob in the passenger seat. If I have a passenger I put the fob in the removed ashtray holder. If I have my purse with me everything stays in there.

You can 'pair' up to 6 different phones, but you have to tell the system which phone to pair with at any given time - it won't automatically search and link up with the 1st BT phone it detects. So, if my wife drives the IS, unless she changes the settings, it will remain 'paired' with my phone, even tho I'm not in the car - definitely room for some improvement here . . .
