Just re-read this whole thread...

Gernby, how many miles do you have on your car now? Have you changed your oil again? Just curious what you are going to do based on the 2nd analysis results...

There is no significant performance difference between synthetics in a practical sense. They are ALL outstanding in their ability to protect, and few conventional oils can compete with synthetics for longevity of protection. Yes, there are some, but trying to find them on a Sunday night in a small town is, well, even more challenging. Mobil 1 has excellent performance and the best availability. That alone makes it my choice for my street vehicles.
It's even cheaper if you buy them in costco! I stocked 2 cases (12 quarts) in my gargae.......too bad they dont have 5W-20.......

Wally World has Mobil 1 5w-20 in stock now where I live (finally!) I just bought two 5 quart jugs yesterday for $23 each.

I did my 3rd change at 13,200 and replaced it with M1 5W-20. I have the used oil sitting on my kitchen counter waiting for me to send it in to Blackstone.

OK, I'll stay tuned for the results...

BTW, I got a notice from Blackstone today saying that the standard analysis is now $22.50...

Buying the bulk pre-paid analysis is still the same price...

back to the non-stopping weight question:

should i keep it 5w-20 or 5w30?

dilemma:

costco only got 5w-30 cases (6 qt) for $29.XX. walmart (and others) has the 5 qt jugs for $2X. Price is not an issue cos it cost about the same...

since our cars need 6.5 qt (correct me if i am wrong) it's kinda hard to buy 2 jugs everytime and keep a 90% full jug for next oil change.

besides, if i am going to wal-mart (dont have one in SF area at all), that means i have to drive an extra trip there to get them vs. costco (which i go every other week).

Would it work if i get a 5w-20 jug and top up the rest with 5w-30 ? would it work ? any side effects?

anyone would recommend that?

It's just oil... You'll be fine... You can just use 5w-30, don't worry about the mixing... I've used many types of similar oil, unless you are in extremely hot areas, or extremely cold areas, it makes almost no difference... Good luck!

It won't hurt anything to use a 5 quart jug of 5w-20 and add another 1.7 qt of 5w-30. The end result will be ever so slightly higher than 5w-20, but not enough for anyone but the most **** tribologist to notice.

I wouldn't see anything wrong with it if it was the same brand and type of oil. However, I don't see the reason to mess with mixing. I always just buy a 5 qt jug, and an additional 2 separate quarts of the same oil.

Thanks for posting. After a couple more changes the numbers will settle down. The next UOA will be more informative.
