My neighbor has a c55 and it isnt any faster than my IS. We've raced at leasts 20 times and we are always dead even. the only time he has ever pulled on me was on the freeway when we were well over 100mph, and even then he only had a slight advantage.

I think for straight speed go with the C55. For the whole package go with the IS....plus it's new! Isn't the C63 going to be coming out soon? I was big on just speed so I bought an 03 RS6 but the sucker just doesn't do it for me. The interior is weak for an 85K car. I finally realized it wasn't all about speed so I bought an IS350!

Just wondering what facts do you base this on? Everything I've read says just the opposite.

I agree, but most people have this preconceived notion that all AMG/M cars are beasts. The IS is HIGHLY underrated, people need to stop selling it so short.

YES! someone that understands. My dad is a HUGE AMG fanatic. We've owned many a AMG cars before. Our current line up of 3 point stars includes the CLS 55 AMG, SLK 55 AMG, and an S550. I've driven the C55 AMG before, and it's not that great. Yes, most AMG's are head banging fast, but the C55 is VERY overrated and VERY overpriced. Just my 2 cents though. Go with what you like best, and as long as youre happy with the car, that's all that matters.

Default Go with the IS...MB=Boring - even the AMG after awhile

Traded my C32 for the IS350. Got really bored with the styling. It was nice to crush most cars on the road but I was always getting the "..But it looks like grandpa's car..."

If you're going to buy and not lease go with the Lexus. If you are going to lease go with the MB. Resale value on a MB sucks. I looked at MB but every little thing cost a lot and the resale SUX.
Just my .02.
Good luck.

mercedes is getting worse and worse..
I said it, i dont care.
its true.
i dislike the interior everything is 2 bunched up.
there navi screens are to small and also hard to use.
and with all that power under the hood of that c-class...
better start making friends with the benzo mechanics because thats where you are going to be most of the time.
Your a good guy Swordfish, go with the lexo.

I thought so too. I personally HATE the interior of our CLS55 AMG. It's just like our old E55 AMG (excluding the rear seats). It looks like they rushed through it. But when my dad brought home the S550, I absolutely LOVED the interior. It's gorgeous. The exterior....well, that's another story haha. I guess my point is, MB is starting to step it up again and is trying to get their old rep back.

As a former MB owner, I was also looking into a used C55 before I bought the IS. I couldn't believe how a near 60k car can lose almost 20k in just a year and a half. The 2005 C55 came out in fall of 2004 and it costed about 58-60k loaded but they can be found for around 40-45k today on the used car market. I have never driven the C55 so I'm not sure if it is indeed faster than the IS350 but it is a nice car overall- luxurious and prestige sedan with a AMG V8 . The suede sides on the seats are a nice touch as well as the quad exhaust tips.

To the OP: Both cars will not dissappoint you, it just depends if you don't mind spending 40K+ on a used car.

You don't think MB parts are designed to be more stout, and last longer? That's the German way. If I had to choose a car that was going to last 300,000 miles, it would be a Mercedes. Not a Lexus.

You still haven't answered the question. Because it's german doesn't make it more stout or reliable if you interpret stout = reliability. Audi and VW? both not that reliable and they're German.
A Ford F350 is a stout truck, does that make it more reliable? I think not. It's the little things that make the difference - fit, finish, tollerences, materials, testing, and research. Lexus does the little things to perfection.

I won't disagree that the German cars are better than most but read the publications and magazines on reliability. they weigh in on a multiple sources, not one persons opinion.
