Right. More torque = more horsepower. If you have to multiply torque by rpm to get hp, wouldn't it make sense that more torque = more hp?
HOWEVER - WHERE you make more torque is most important. You need to make more torque at some useful point in the powerband, or better, some useful spread in the powerband.
Any successful engine builder decides what rpm range is most important for the application, then sets up the engine to make best torque in that range. It's the only way to make best power.
You guys that talk about "no backpressure" and losing torque always make me laugh. BTW, unless properly designed, and dual set up will actually increase backpressure, lose power, and add unnecessary weight. But that's a whole page post by itself. Maybe more.

For me the IS will be a perfect blend of power, performance and luxury. If you really wanted a "fast" car pickup a new GT500 Mustang for around the same price as a mid loaded IS350. That gets you 500 hp and 480 ft pounds of tourqe. But it also gets you poor interior quality and the typical Ford mechanical issues. Do exhaust systems and intakes to get a higher performace "feel" for the car (and a grin on your face). Overall hp gains of less than 20 horses is not going to do too much.
Remember the IS350 will never really end up being a "drag" car (supercharger may help..but against a GT500...) but it is and will continue to be a nice "sleeper" for those of us who want the reliability of a "Toyota/Lexus" product with the performance of a car that can "smoke" most of the "average" cars on the road.
Just FYI I used to drag race when I was younger with a 10.5 - 11 sec 1/4 mile Ford Torino GT with a 525 HP V8 and a 125hp NOS system. That card was brutal fast (and street legal) but does not hold a candle to the Lexus in an overall sense.
In other words buy it or mod it because you love to do it.
