But in general, I prefer it when companies don't design their products assuming that I'm a moron. Thanks for helping me not to run out of gas, but I'm a grown-up now, and I think I can handle that on my own.

It seems like you can EASILY assume 30+ miles of highway travel beyond the "0" mark before you even think about running out of gas. This is actually sort of annoying, because once you pass 0, you have no indicator of how close to empty you really are. So whether you have 2 gallons left or 0.2, it will say the same thing...
There isn't an "Audi way" proven by this video of an A8 twin turbo diesel driven 800 miles in Europe.

In the video, the gas meter says, "0 miles" and the car still keeps going, for another 40+ or something like that. In my B5 A4, I went past the 0 mile range multiple times (albeit for only 4-5 miles but still).

Well, I just meant the way that jzalkin described the performance of his A4. I have no idea whether Audis do this in general. My point is that I'd prefer an actual estimate without a buffer, or at least without a 50+ mile buffer.

I don't see why it would be so hard to measure how much gas you have in the tank. I'm sure they could do it accurately if they really put their minds to it. It's annoying because in the past I have gone way out of my way off the highway to find a gas station, because I thought I was almost out of gas, and wanted to go to the closest one, when in fact I had 30-40 more miles left, easily.
