Thats exactly what I was telling the guy at lexus...you can get into accidents and the gas tank will still be intact. me driving the speed limit and not even feel a bump, shake, or rattle...and there is a gaping hole in my tank.

Has any seen the videos of people stealing gas from street cars!! They basically drill a hole in your tank and funnel it into an emty can and then run away!! Just hope that this isn't happening where you live.

Why, tanks are plastic.

obviously this is safety related and car gas tanks should not be vulnerable to road debris. therefore since it is out of the ordinary and to me is a factory defect, it should be covered by warranty.

The plastic tank on the Supra has a full metal shield to prevent exactly this kind of thing.

Wow. I never would even consider that kind of a failure to be possible. Best of luck with the repair. Also, a junkyard gas tank is pretty likely to be available by now. Typically junkyard parts are half of new. Gas tanks almost never fail in an accident, so there should be a few available by now.

Maybe you're using dull drill bits. Sharp bits wouldn't generate enough heat cutting plastic to ignite gas in a liquid state.

I am not so sure road debris would cause this. I think you need to look into the problem( or rather lexus needs to) than drawing the conclusion. I used to live in a country where there are tons of road debris, rocks, nail, you name it, and I never had that kind of crazy incident before.

Good luck.

But if I were you and my car has a punctured gas tank and gas spill all over the road, I'd be suing lexus as we speak. That was some scary *****.

jack up the ride and take some pics!!

btw- drilling into the gas tank isn't how i'd steal gas... i'd just pry off the gas panel and undo the cap...

but that's if i were to ever steal gas...

and i wouldn't.

Wrong. Your Lexus DEALERSHIP does not agree. So screw them. Call up Lexus USA Customer Service. Dealerships are morons. Dealerships tell people that 2006 lexus IS cars don't come with clear coat and that in 2007 the shark fin will only come if you own a cell phone.

FORGET the dealership. Call Lexus North America. Go to the source. You could easily sue Toyota over this hole in your fuel tank. Even a class action lawsuit. They would be ill-advised to not replace it free of charge for you.

Sue over this?!? There was no negligence or defect on Lexus' part. Anything can be punctured. Next you'll be suing over a flat tire. Get real!
