Default Winter Wheels/Tires in the DC area?

All you DC, VA, MD folks... Are you / Have you invested in a set of 4 winter wheels/tires? We only have a few days/weeks at the MOST each year of snow, I've never had a rear wheel drive car as my daily driver so I'm wondering if I want to bother with a set of snow tires.

I'm in CT, and honestly I don't like the idea of buying snow tires for the very few days of snow we'll have. I work out of my home, so if we have a bad storm I'll smile out the window and stay indoors until the roads are cleared. Last winter we had TWO snow storms and that was it...I was glad I gambled and stuck with all-seasons (though it was an A4 w/quattro). When I lived in Minneapolis, that was different...although even up there the roads were always plowed constantly.

RWD though is a different ballgame. I still might gamble since I'm not forced to go out 5 days a week.

If your driving the beltway, B/W parkway, Interstate 95 or the DC city streets, you might consider the rear snow tires with wheels.

All season on the front should be fine as long as you're careful on the ice patches...

Ya, that's what I was thinking... Just to be able to push my way up some DC city streets/hills if it's icy... Sigh, what a PITA...

I owned both a 2003 MB C230K and a 2005 Lexus IS300 and I did not have any problems with driving in the snow and ice. The traction control worked well in both braking and accelerating. Also, the "snow" mode worked well for me.

In any case, if the snow/ice is that bad, I am keeping my *** at home...

The Dunlop Sportmaxx tires that came with my IS350 were ABSOLUTELY USELESS in snow. I couldn't make it up a 2 degree incline with 1 inch of snow!!! I couldn't make it up my driveway either. When the snow melted and it was slushy, it was like driving in rain... but fresh snow, powder, etc. forget about it.

I ordered a full set of OEM rims on ebay for about $600 bucks, got the snow tires at tire rack for about $900 and got a set of TP sensors and had them mounted for about $800. But what a difference in the winter! It drove better than my FWD camry and accords used to. Not quite like my RX400, but didn't get stuck even after 8 inches of fresh snow!!!

I hate to say it, but...duh. SportMaxx are max performance summer tires...they have no business being driven on any type of snow or slush.
