So, just to keep this thread updated - there is another new TSIB for this same problem dated October 30, 2008. Lexus is on its fifth iteration of new part numbers for the cam drive sprockets, and the range of affected VINs extends through the 2008 model year.

This is sad news to me. They've been through four redesigns on the part and it STILL isn't right. Maybe this latest one is better, but I'm not being optimistic here.

The new TSIB number is L-SB-0156-08.

Well with the 2008 now in the lineup it gives them more car's in production to work on a fix. Sorry 2008 owners, but the noise is coming.

Hopefully they'll get it right soon.

A million thanks to Lance for making my repair happen. You're the best, bro!

I sent an email to Putnam Lexus (Bay Area) w/ Lance's updated tsib and an youtube video of the rattling, and they said the parts are on order. As soon as they come in, my car is going in for surgery.

I also want to give a to my service manager, Greg Veerman for being so trusting of my issue when others weren't. I'm never going back to Serramonte to deal w/ those idiots again. Greg's my man and I hope he will be yours too. Excellent service and professional!

Hopefully, no more rattles and loud idling when this is all said and done.

I just had the engine startup rattle fix wrapped up last week at Longo Lexus in El Monte. No weird rattling sounds and with the ecu reset it does feel a lot faster. I hope this fix will end that terrible rattling noise that comes and goes.

Longo was first rate- it was fixed in about 1 day!

Hope everyone who needs the fix gets it and all the folks who had it done won't experience that rattle ever again! Keeping my fingers crossed!

I'll echo this. I've been thankful that my problem got fixed with no questions asked earlier on, but feel for anyone who is being plauged by this. For those with the same issue in my area, Lexus of Silver Spring was very helpful in getting the issue taken care of, and once they got the parts, turned the car around within 24 hours. They at least have some experience fixing the issue, if it helps any.

I'm surprised to see this problem still appearing on the 08s.

Has anyone had this issue fixed at a dealership in the Washington state area or in British Columbia?

I have a US IS350 but live in Canada. Think it might be easier to drive to Spokane and deal with it there than have to make the trip to Vancouver and deal with the cross boarder warranty delays. Both are pretty much equal driving distance for me.

A follow up to my situation: The experience has been pleasant so far. The repairs took about 4 business days. It could have taken 3 days, but Putnam Lexus didn't want to rush such a big surgery, so they took its time with 4. They did a few road tests afterwords to make sure it was up to standards.

Here's what my senses told me when I drove off with it.

1. Acceleration was smoother (perhaps due to ecu reest)
2. That obvious Direct Injection noise (tick tick tick) is now gone!
3. Engine start up is smoother. It purrs.

Overall, the car is MUCH quieter. I would say almost like someone put another layer of sound deadening material. They even filled up my gas tank (which was originally half full). Also, the usual car wash and fluids was filled up.

Here's a list of things they replaced:

1 17176-31020 Gasket, Air Surge TA
2 13050-31162 Gear Assy, Camshaft
W 1067
4 90430-16012 Gasket
2 90430-16016 Gasket
1 11328-31030 Gasket, Timing Chain
4 11159-0P010 Gasket Camshaft Bea
2 90430-A0001 Gasket
1 23915-46011 Insulator, Fuel Pump
1 11214-31020 Gasket, Cylinder Head
1 11213-31040 Gasket, Cylinder Head

The dreaded engine rattle. Just left my car at the dealership for the past 2 days and "of course" they could not duplicate the problem. Also, apparently my 06 is350 is outside of the affected VIN's per the new TSIB dated October 30, 2008. The service manager did say however that regardless of my car's VIN they would cover the repair if they can duplicate it. So now I'm on a mission to capture this on video/audio as my evidence.

Not sure if I should just wait until the engine rattle ocurrs more frequently, record it, then take it in? My worry is that after 5 TSIB's they still don't know if these repairs will fix the problem. Any thoughts?

5 TSIBs related to this specific issue? That doesn't sound right.

I'm not sure which TSIB you're using, but for the 06 350, you'll want the EG019-07. It's linked below, just click the PDF attachment:

http://www.lexustsb.com/questions/20...t+Cold+Startup

You can save yourself time/effort with the video evidence, thanks to Caudlek. He posted a video of the issue on page 7 of the thread. His video is linked below:

The dealer should be aware of their TSIBs, though. I'd present these as a start, and state your case. Hopefully this helps.

Thanks for the feedback and links Shinobi-X.

I did bring the TSIB: EN019-07 in with me to the dealership however it is now obsolete since the TSIB was updated on October 30, 2008 (L-SB-0156-08). This updated TSIB includes YRs 2006 - 2008 IS350's and applies to vehicles produced BEFORE the Production Change Effective VINs shown below:

JTHBE262#85020624
JTHBE262#82015907

I'm still concerned about this repair because after 2 years, why are they unable to fix this problem with the 2008 models?

For those of you who have gotten this repair done as the TSIB describes, has the noise disappeared, if yes how long has it been.

My VIN number falls outside of the affected VIN's with this new TSIB but the dealership told me if they can replicate the noise or I can provide further evidence it would be covered under the warranty regardless. I'm having second thoughts on getting this repair done because it is such an invasive engine repair.

Yeah, I think a good deal of us are puzzled as to why it would still affect the 08 vehicles, but it appears its an elusive issue.

I did have the repair done as described in the TSIB, and the car has been fine for over a year now. In this time, its responded well in all climate conditions, nothing abnormal.

Hopefully the video can assist with your issue, though, as it's a tough noise to replicate on the spot...and never seems to want to show itself when you need it to. Also, I can't say my issue got progressively worse as time went on, but as others have stated, it was usually during cold starts. I don't recall it ever happening on consecutive startup attempts, either.
