1G1 is basecoat/clearcoat, no 3-stage.

I believe 212 is Obsidian or "Black" in layman Toyota terms and if it is, it's also just basecoat/clearcoat.

Alright, here we go.

3-Stage IS Colors (basecoat/midcoat/clearcoat):

8U0-Black Saphire Pearl
062-Crystal White
074-Glacier Frost Mica
3R1-Matador Red
077-Starfire Pearl

2-Stage IS Colors (basecoat/clearcoat)

202-Black Onyx
8P8-Blue Onyx Pearl-5 Variants!
8R6-Breakwater Blue Metallic-3 Variants
6U3-Desert Sage-2 Variants
4P7-Mystic Gold Metallic-2 Variants
212-Obsidian
1G0-Smokey Granite Metallic-2 Variants
1G1-Tungsten Pearl-1 Variant

The 2-stage colors as you can see each have variants due to different production facilities producing the same colors. I would imagine that for the most part that IS's do not see much variation due to them all being produced in Japan and probably in one factory.

The 3-stage colors do not get variations because they can be adjusted by the amount of mid color applied. More mid color equals a darker color generally speaking.

I'm suprised by the amount of 3-stage colors on IS's. I was particularly surprised at 8U0 being a 3-stage. Usually auto companies shy away from 3-stage colors due to the extra steps and quaility control, but it seems like Lexus does not live in fear!

Are you sure that the Black Onyx is clearcoated? There has been discussion on other threads regarding Lexus Black Onyx paint being single stage and not clearcoated.

There may have been "discussions," but all modern paint systems used by automotive manufacturers are clear coated.

Yup, exactly.

For refinish, it's possible to get some systems in single-stage, but for the most part they are few and far between.

This girl I'm dating works for Lexus customer satisfaction, and she assures me that the Black cars are NOT clearcoated. They used to be, but they it would fade, and start looking grayish. So this is another reason why the Black Lexus' have "soft paint" with rock chips. There's no clear coat, so it just looks deep black.

A "fact" huh? PM me and we'll make a wager on that...

Actually, I'll bet any member on here, a bill each, that black onyx has a clear coat...
