Default Updated Nav disc

I just called my dealership and told them I had an 06' IS350 and wanted an updated nav disc. They told me they have a part number but the disc usually comes out in October but has not come out yet. Then I asked about the price and she said the price is always the same.....$425.00 CANADIAN.

Will the update she is talking about be the 6.1 disc currently in the 2007 models?

The map info on my 5.1 disc sucks for Calgary, it seems like it is about 2003 data. Anyone with the 6.1 disc in Calgary care to comment on the map data?

That price sucks, I wonder if Toyota will sell the disc for less? Would it be the same disc? I think my bro's 2006 Sienna has the same disc as mine.

We should all buy one disc and ***** it out across the forum.
Wonder when it will be available for release.

Thumbs down

Well Toyota says the exact same thing as Lexus. Disc not available yet and when it is it will be $425.

I think it is bull**** to charge $425 for a nav disc. I can buy a portable GPS for $300 with better info on it.

Why should they be free? If you bought a 2006 Rand McNally Road Atlas of the USofA at Barnes & Noble, or Borders, you wouldn't expect to take your receipt in to the store a year or two later, and get a 2007 version, would you? You don't need to update it each year, just like you don't throw out your old paper maps each year. Although the cost of the physical DVD is insignificant (<$1), the real cost is for some organization somewhere to compile and digitize all the restaurants, streets, and other aspects of the NAV system. I don't know why this should be free. You paid for the electronic system, and a copy of the info that was available at the time. As it is updated that is your responsibility to purchase it. Whether or not you agree with the cost of the update is a different matter, but technology isn't always cheap. But I seriously doubt most of us have a real need to ever update the system in the four or five years we own the vehicle. I don't know how many discs Lexus sells but it must be a pretty small percentage of the total NAV systems out there.

I believe Cadillac gives the buyer 3 free updates to their navigation option.

i don't see how the price you paid for something has anything to do with it. If you pay $12,000 for a car, you have to pay for your own gasoline but if you pay $95,000 for your car, you should get the gasoline for free? is the the general thinking?

Don't waste your money, the only differences will be new roads that have been built. You can use the same disc for many years before an updated disc will make ANY difference, if any.

so the roads might not be the biggest issue but i think a lot of people want to take advantage of the latest points of interest, phone numbers, etc. it's pretty tough to punch in "best buy" and it tells you there are 4 in your city when you know there are 7 and the latest 3 are all closer to you than the original 4. overland park is growing and while i won't need a new disc this time, i will next time.

I dont understand your thoughts. Your analogy is not related to the subject at all.

Literally it costs Lexus NOTHING to make these discs available for old customers. ALL the R&D costs are figured into the sale of the new cars. They are not making these discs... hoping that they will recover the cost from owners of the old nav system.

Updates should be provided for free or at least at a low cost. Gouging old customers for updates is just a kick to the pants.

If you are charged a premium for something.... it should include stuff that lesser systems include. Lesser systems include limited updates for free or a small premium for large updates. $450 for an updated nav disc. Thats ridiculous.

If I pay $2550 for a nav system, it should include everything that a $500 muvi includes.

What makes you think that Navteq (or whatever digital map provider Toyota/Lexus uses) licenses them to provide updates at no cost?

It costs digital map companies a fortune to keep their maps and point-of-interest databases up-to-date; I think it is ridiculous to assume that they don't charge their OEM customers a per-user fee for distributing those updates to customers.

Lexus doesnt pay $450 per disc. A company as large as toyota has A LOT more pull than that.

Portable nav companies can provide updates for free/little cost. Whereas... Toyota has to charge $450 per user that wants an update. Thats ridiculous. If toyota is paying $200 per user, they need to fire whomever did those negotiations.

Guys a gentle reminder that active discussion about software piracy will get you banned from this forum pretty quickly.

Prohibited Topics
The following topics and links are prohibited on Club Lexus:

• Carfax requests on any records of a particular VIN. The Carfax service is inexpensive insurance and Club Lexus does not allow theft of their service on our forum.
• Links to sales on auction sites such as eBay or other commerce websites to promote an item the member is selling elsewhere or has a vested interest in.
• Links to multi-level marketing, pyramid schemes or other posts where the member posting the link achieves financial or other personal gains.
• Links or discussion / promotion of illegal drug use
Links or discussions regarding software piracy including duplication of Lexus Navigation DVDs or other Lexus software
• Links to pornography or links to other sites that are not work safe, including sites with banner advertisements that are not work safe.
• Advertisements for non-approved vendors or group buys sponsored by non-approved vendors or other automotive forums
• Links to posts on other forums that foster cross-forum arguments

These threads may be removed, locked or deleted without notification to the member.
Also a reminder that you can get OEM Lexus nav updates from our CL vendors far cheaper than you can usually from local dealerships.

For example, from Sewell Lexus (Lexus-Parts) it's $250 (not sure this is OEM you have or the new update but the price is typical), see also there is a $40 promotion link with return of your old DVD. CL members also get 10% off their listed price.

Because I honestly can't argue with "it costs lexus nothing" and "gouging old customers" and "toyota...has more pull."

So yes, I agree with you, the update dvd is too expensive for you. Go buy a nuvi and be happy and you will be happy with it since buying the nav and an update dvd makes you sad.
