Now I'm Curious. How much did you pay for your tag?

Does that include some sort of property tax? As I said, in VA tags are like $36 a year, but we still have property tax. Comes in October -- 4.5% of vehicle blue book at the beginning of the year. They started phasing it out a few years ago, but never quite made it. Their car tax relief varies -- not sure what their formula is though -- for my 2004 car I get a 35% discount, bug for my 1998 car I get a 66% discount. The fact is they will never phase it out -- easy rip off of the constituents. Any time someone even talks about it, they cut vital services, then say "see, if we had that car tax we could fund the ambulances...". F'ing politicians...
Oh no. I still pay property tax. That is the price of the tag. On my 97' GS eclipse when I got rid of it this year.. my tag was still $65 on an almost 10 year old car.
A friend of mine purchased a Mercedes and it stickered for well over 50k, his tag was into the thousands. We get ripped, yet it goes to road maintenance and crap like that. I don't think our property tax is THAT bad.

Property taxes in TX can run on the high side, but that's another story.

6% State sales tax; transferred my plates from SUV for right around $15 which carried my registration through till October when it jumped to $186.00 (based on value).

Here in NY, its $34.25 a year for registration. That's on my GX. A lighter vehicle will cost less since NY State goes by the weight of a vehicle. Unlike many states which go by the value of a vehicle. Of course we still have to pay sales tax on the vehicle which can range from 5 - 9%. But that is only paid the first time the vehicle gets registered. We also need a annual safety inspection done which here costs $10.00. Some areas in NY require a more advanced emission test which I think is about $37.00 a year.
