Lexus considers taking a mulligan on L-Tuned brand
Originally launched in 2000, L-Tuned was supposed to be Lexus' answer to BMW's M Division and Mercedes-Benz' AMG. But the brand never took off, largely because it was focused more on appearance rather than performance modifications, and was scrapped three years later.
Toyota's U.S. COO Jim Lentz told Automotive News at last week's SEMA show that he believes Lexus' current lineup, especially the sport-themed IS, which is in line for coupe and convertible variants , is in a much better position than it was when L-Tuned was first conceived. Lentz also believes the GS450h and recently launched LS 460 would also benefit from an L-Tuned model.
It remains to be seen if execs in Japan can be convinced to give L-Tuned another shot , but it makes more sense than ever for Lexus to try something akin to L-Tuned again, especially considing the impending launch of its LF-A high end sports car and the continued strength of its German competition in the performance arena.

I think one of the reasons l-tuned cant take off, is the name. It wont work well if they try to mass market a car.
L-tuned = Lame. It sounds too much like a standard shop, or something that was stock... then tuned. Not performance from the factory.
Look at names like AMG, STI, RallitArt, they all resonate well.
