$2000 from my dealer in Maryland... Gave them my credit card, but they never actually charged the deposit... Not yet anyway, and it's been over 2 months

Thanks everyone for replies. I feel much better now, even if I go to the same dealership (which is unlikely) I will not give them that much of deposit simply because it's not worth it, since I'm not asking for any special configuration. Basically, all I want is sport package.

But I think I figured out why they wanted $5k deposit. It was BS of course, they tried to make me buy one of the cars they had at the moment, thinking $5K deposit will stop me from special order.

I just ordered a 3GS and they said that they won't cash in the check till the car comes, and I they asked for $5K for it.

That makes no sense. Of what use is a check that the dealer will hold for two or three months without cashing it? The whole idea of a deposit is to make it more difficult for you to back out of the deal and a held check does nothing in that regard. There is the chance they won't cash the check but I'd make sure I had $5k sitting in the checking account so when the dealer's finance person wakes up and deposits that check it will clear your account.
