So why are we told 306HP for the IS 350? Yes, I know about the new formula. Are they really 315HP?

Aloha

It went back down to 306HP due to the new SAE standard. Otherwise before, it would of been 315.

Also, the 2GR-FSE is found in:

2007 Lexus GS 350 AWD (304HP)

Don't know what happened to those 2 ponies (IS350 has 306HP).

The S is a designator for the DI/port injection combination.

The D-4S system is a system which combines a direct injection system and a port injection system which injects fuel to the intake ports. This system optimally controls the two types of fuel injectors according to the driving conditions.

The F and G designators are specifically related to included valve angle. Historically F has been a narrow included valve angle (~15 degees) and because of packaging problems, has been associated with ports optimised for economy. The G designation (2JZ-GTE, 3S-GTE, 4A-GE, 4A-GZE) have been associated with wider included valve angles (~23 degrees) which make it possible to orient the ports for better performance given the restrictions on height because of hood line requirements.

Motorcycles do not have these issues, and have both narrow included valve angles and good port design because they've figured out how to make the ports exit the pocket area at high angles while keeping the included angles small for combustion chamber efficiency. If we didn't mind having intakes sticking up through the hood we could do the same with these older design car engines. Obviously with the 2GR-FSE, they've figured out how to get both.

Also to add. There are no G head engines that are V's. They are all inline 4 & 6 configuration. The G head configuration is a true DOHC design.
