I am in the market of upgrading as well.
Ordered my Tanabe exhaust from a local shop, ordered Joez today, just added blue fog vinyl from Rvinyl, probably be getting window tint in couple weeks and debating about getting the Tanabe NF210 or Eibach pro kit.
I want to lower my car for better looks while not sacrificing too much original comfort, but I just don't want imperfection since I have to use products that wasn't made for the AWD.
I will update some pictures once i have completed the first few mods.

Stock beside my protection mods ahaha --- so far I have the full clear bra, soon install the rvinyl red-out, clear headlights & fogs overlay, and 35% tinted windows all around.
If I had extra $$$ I would get an IS-F tail light upgrade, Gfx ground-effect kit, Tanabe exhaust, signal mirrors (M3 Style), alumi pedals, intakes, sway bar, 19" black rim like VOLK or something nice. ahaha that if I had the money to play with.
Reality, spending on what is need is better than what we want sometime is always best!

I'm in the same age group as Magellan and PorSeimpre, and think that some personalization is good. I've always been a car guy, and modded everything I ever owned to some degree.
the IS is just a beautiful car. Having a AWD myself, I feel that performace wise there is not anything to add that is worth the money. From a looks perspecitive, yeah just few things to be added to enhance whats already there without going crazy (rear spoiler, front lip) both OEM. I need to convert to HID just because the non HID are not bright enough (gett'n old I guess).
As for rims, well Magellan has a piont, but i think it's personal preference.
I don't like the Stock 17" 10 spokes. But I'm not running out to change them until I need new tires .(LOVE the Work T1S's) But also know that's a coupe grand that could be spent some where more useful. (like in the construction of my home theater)
I keep cars a long time, so anything I do, I know I will get my monies worth.
Cuz' lets face it, if you go to sell it or trade it in, mostly all that investment will be lost.
My advice, just be smart about it, because a car is the worst investment anyone can make from a financial piont of view. (it's a liability until it's paid for and continually depreciates until it's worth it's weight in scrap metal)

Not big on modding here. It screws with resale value and the warranty. I think a quality car should come correct from the factory. If you have to spend $5000 in rims and suspension, why not just buy the next car up on the chain? That's how I look at it at least. It's really a personal and subjective choice.

Heres a question for you thou, what if you dont plan to resell and the warranty has expired already?
