I got in a race with a brand new M5 yesterday on my way to work. I seriously hung with him up to 140mph, but then obviously he kept pulling away hardcore. My car was redlined. I guess thats our top speed? Anyone broke the 140mph barrier?

More than likely he was just playing with you. 6 cyl engines don't have the torque once you get above 60MPH.

you were in 6th gear and the car was at the redline at 140 mph? i would think the 350 would still have alot left in it.

hmm.. well i remember the tach looking like it was redline because my orange indicator light is set to that. It was on. Yea it wasn't going past 140.

and yes its stupid to drive that fast, but hey you don't get that many chances to race an m5. Yes i know he was toying with me too.

Technique

Can't hang with large V8's on the highway... Those cars are big, heavy, and have tons of power... They are like flying missles... I've driven M5s and AMG benzes like the S55... They just keep going right until they slam into the limiter at 155MPH... It's like hitting a goddamn wall, scary as hell...

They really need to remove those 155 mph electronic limiters on the german cars, they are dangerous and pointless... No need to suddenly cut power at high speeds like that...

The e46 M3 won't activate the limiter in 5th gear. You can get it up to about 170 or so, I think.

I haven't gotten past 140, but I did hit about 125 last night with an e46 (vanity plate "AVI8TIR") as my wingman...paced each other in an out of traffic on I-5 south for 200+ miles through the central valley. Afterwards, at a gas station, all we could say to each other was "wow, that was fun."

If you're ever gonna be over 100, though, I strongly recommend having a good radar detector to help you. We both had V1s, oddly enough.

07txlex this was on i-30 right after you cross over loop 12 and it turns into 6 brand new lanes that's like the autobaun. There was also an s2000 and mustang tryin to stay with us, but they fell off around 110.
