gauge on the dash flash at them? Its been in the 30's here and a few times this week the outside temp will flash on and off for a few seconds after pulling out of the garage. Any ideas?

I get the same thing, I was driving up the mountains and it hit 35F and it was flashing. I guess its going "Ahh it's too cold".

I have noticed that happen a couple of times too when I first pull out of the garage, but after a few second it seems to settle down. I was figuring that maybe the drop in temperature was too fast for the read out to display, so it just flashes until it get a more stable reading.

From what I remember reading the manual it says the flashing after starting the car means there is a possibility of ice on the roads.

Other cars that I had had the temp will flash or a snow flake will display indicating the possibility of ice or the conditions are right for freezing. That might be what it is showing

Yes, it's yet another retarded safety thing... Flashing when it is cold enough that frost/ice could form on the road surface... My 05 Jaguar S-type 4.2 does something similar... Whenever it's below 40, a little green snowflake appears on the instrument cluster... Just a retarded reminder to me that it's cold outside...

Learn something new every day. I never noticed it last winter, since I usually keep the little display on either the current gear indicator or tank avg mileage.

On my Audi, the snowflake was used to indicate that the outside temperature was in the range conducive for the formation of black ice. Which meant that when it got really cold (under 21 degrees Fahrenheit, IIRC) the snowflake would go out.

That makes more sense than my Jaguar... Which seems to go on if it's 38 or colder... Which is silly... you know, this should be a customizable setting... THAT would make the most sense...

At least it doesn't make a BING noise like on BMW's when it drops to that temp.

I read that it flashes because it's too low for the temperature gauge to read out... just like its only goes up to a certain temp and no higher...

and since its sooo low of temp, there's a possibility of black ice on the roads...

Same thing for E46 BMW's, I am assuming a freeze warning, at least that is what the BMW's are telling you.
