Default Bypassing the throttle body

There's a new part being sold on eBay. It re-directs coolant around the throttle body rather than through it. Claims to add 8 hp at the wheels. Is this possible? Can it be dangerous?

Possible? Yes.

Dangerous? Under the right circumstances, yes. The throttlebody is heated to prevent icing and potentially sticking in a fixed position from getting encased in ice.

I'm trying to imagine how that would increase power?

That'd be cool. All I got was a cheap set of piston return springs.

Ths subject came up in corvettes and it was a worthless mod. It's not worth the effort and there is no HP gain. Cold air increases HP when it is forced or at high speeds only.

Default Throttle

It started with RSX's. You bypass the coolant through the throttle body so that the intake air is slightly cooler. It worked to a certain extent but nothing to the tune of 8 RWHP. It is a pretty useless mod.

im sure its started before the RSX's... i did this several years ago with my Integra. it also caused issues with the idle as well. it would probably worth it for 8 whp if it doesnt cause idle issues and you are somewhere where it doesnt freeze.

This mod was on my 3000 when I bought it, back in 1999, with 60K miles.

I have poor idle issues when its cold, but the car has 185K Miles and is still rolling. So I say, the mod doesnt hurt much.

So what are they selling in this auction? A small tube?

I've done this mod before on other cars, and never regretted it. It isn't a mod that adds power as much as it prevents power loss due to heat soak. For those of us that live in the deep south, it's a simple cheap mod that has some benefit.

This sounds like one of those "we know better than the engineers" mods that is a tremendous waste of time, and may result in warranty issues later. I would leave it alone. If you have to do it, at least wait until your car is out of warranty.

there is a similar mod for hondas, but it involves replacing the intake manifold gasket with a more insulting material than the stock gasket, made some decent gains and you dont do this bypass coolant mod business, normal car operation isnt affected

I did this on my Corvette. Living in Hawaii, icing is not a problem. It cost me about $2. All you do is bypass the throttle body. I just used a longer hose. Took about five minutes. Did it help? Who knows, kind of like everything we are now trying on the Lexus, depends on who you ask.

Aloha

That sounds about right. I remember reading about it in '89 in relation to Corvettes and thought about doing it to my GTS Corolla, but didn't like the thought of having it ice up in the NorCal winter fog.

I remember the Corvette guys saying it improved trap speed - blah, blah, blah, but I tend to agree it's about useless as mods go.
