Back in the days when I used to build engines, I've learned that to get everything in the motor to seat properly we use oil with very little or no detergent at all to break-in the motor. Which are most of the time the cheapest oil at the store, around less than a buck a quart. The results are excellent everytime we disassemble the motor again.
However, "IF" manufactors use these kind(detergentless) oil and switching it out early is just delaying the break-in process.
My 01' IS300 at 33k miles still has metal shavings in the oil . I dont if this is normal for Toyota motors but I got scared and traded that car in a while back.I bought it used at 30k miles

If I might make one further point about the oil filters containing small metallic particles - that's their job! I'd be more concerned if I opened up the filter and found it clean as a whistle, that would suggest to me that it wasn't catching anything. The very fact that the metal particles are in the filter means that they are aren't in the oil, and once in the filter they aren't going anywhere. Change it by all means but after a few thousand miles a filter with small particles in it is just as effective as a new one.

Here's the result of not changing the oil in my Jaguar for 3 years... The oil was just fine...

I think you lease your cars. If I leased I would stick to the factory recommendations also.

Since I bought it, I like changing the oil more frequently just to make me feel better and add alittle insurance. I normally keep all my cars near or past the 200k mile mark. So i'll just stick to my od habits.

All this previous talk about sludge issues in some of the past Toyota engines. Sometimes manufactures arent correct with their intervals. Sooner is better in my book, especially since oil is cheap.

isn't that what the OIL FILTER is for ???????

i would not worry too much about changing the oil too early as some of the cars has addictives in their oil for break-in purposes (I know honda did add some stuff for new cars and they would not recommend you to change oil anytime sooner than 5000 miles)........

I too am overly **** and after 2 weeks and 1,100 miles I'm getting mine changed.
