alright i have been given a few good offers. I am looking at a 07 tungsten pearl black int with navi.......i have got my payment in the mid 4's which is perfectly fine with me but the problem is pushing myself over the hump and buying it....i did the same thing with my celica....kept talking myself out of it cause i am scared of big purchases like cars, houses, or my gf's engagement ring lol. anyway......my worry is that in 3 4 years ill get tired or they will change something on the IS that will make me want the newer model. I love the look of this car all around....am i just being a Pu@@%y or what? convince me to buy this thing already lol

Well, are you the type of guy that wants a new car every 3-4 years, or are you gonna keep this car for a long time. Price is not a major factor so let's not even talk about that.

It seems like you are concerned about function. Do you need a small compact car or do you need a car with more room and storage capacity? Do you need the speed or can you do without? Are you concerned about the comfort of driving more than the thrill of handling? Will you be driving alone most of the time, or will you have passengers often in the back?

These are the questions you should be asking yourself. If the IS is not functional, it is not a good buy, whether or not you got it for cheap...


P.S. Buy the damn car!

Honestly, if you need other people to convince you to buy it, then you probably shouldn't be buying it. You'd know if it was the right decision. That's just how it works.

Lease it... not a bad idea. Unless you cant keep it under 15K miles.

Otherwise buy it. If you dont want it in 4 years... sell it. Is it a 250 you are looking at? I bet it will still be worth at least 18K.

The 01 IS300 still fetches around 14-15K. Just last year, they were going for 18-21K.

So 4 good lessons
1) Lexus's keep their value fairly well
2) Sell your car before the new model hits the showroom floor. The upswing to that, is buy a car when its relatively new in its life cycle.
3) Options lose their value quick like lighting. Most people you see complaining about resale, bought a loaded IS350. - So make sure you get the options you would regret not getting, but pass on ones you wont regret.

4) If you can find a loaded 2006 used, you can probably get a good deal.

agree w/ the posters above. if you need convincing then perhaps it's not the right time. however if convincing is required b/c you like having the "latest and greatest", get into a lease! money wise they are competitive with purchase financing (well, most of the time).

we lease 2 of 3 cars and it works out great. always have something nice and new to drive. the 3rd car (RX) is the workhorse; it'll be with us for many more years (countless costco runs, kids, dogs, ski trips, etc etc)

if you're worried about major changes to the car, look at most Lexus models and you'll see they don't make major mid-life changes....the 2IS just came out in 06 so you should be safe for about 5 years. (look at the 1st gen IS - basically no changes were made to it)

Are you looking at other cars as well? If yes, which one? Anyways, like others have said, lease it. Looks like its the solution for you if you're really set on the IS.

Read over this forum and I think you will discover that most people love their IS's. It's a great car. It is not a perfect car.

Are you going to get tired of it in 3-4 years? How can any of us tell you that?

Sounds to me like you don't really know what you want yet. In that case, I would not recommend buying this or any other car until you know what your are looking for in a car. Not only for now, but in the future.

a lexus is a known commodity, hard to go wrong.

here's how my purchasing experience went:
my old car had gone out of warranty, the AC wasn't cold anymore and I didn't feel like spending money fixing it. I knew I wanted a sporty sedan, my immediate choices were the IS, G35, 330, A4, or TL. At the time, the IS was the newest model. I already had the G35c and thought having 2 G35's was a bit much.
Having never actually seen the IS, I jumped on the lexus website and found it was pretty powerful and looked pretty good. I emailed a bunch of dealers with the color and options I wanted. A dealer in Dallas responded to me the next day with the car on the lot. We haggled for about 5 minutes over the phone, deal was made and the car was delivered to my driveway the next day via covered flatbed transport. I had actually never seen any IS in real life, first one I saw was when they uncovered mine in my driveway. I would not have purchased this way had it not been a lexus. Again, a lexus, like a camry or accord, is a known commodity.

If it takes a message board to convince you to buy a car, then I wouldn't buy the car. As long as you LIKE the car, and you can AFFORD the car, go for it. If either of those is a no, then I wouldn't.
