Mercedes was a bit to conservative in recycling their junk from their other cars and placing them on their C class

Reliability throughout ownership is a different question. I bought my Lexus for the 'creature features' and the reliability. I miss my BMW steering dearly though, and can't wait to get back in one someday and just drive, but I did not buy a Lexus because the handling is comperable to that of the Europeans.
I do see your point. The Lexus steering lacks communication, which is an important part of the driving experience. I recently just drove my mom's 13-year old 1994 BMW 325is and despite it's age and being automatic, was still more communicative in the steering department than my 2003 IS300 5MT. I aslo felt more confident going into corners hard with the BMW than I did with my 2003 IS.

However, I felt this has improved with my 2007 IS250 6MT. Steering is a bit heavier than the old 2003 IS and the car handle more solidly, though less nimble. Still the steering felt mushy, and lacked that direct feel from the BMW. The 6-speed gearbox of the 2007 BMW 328i that I test drove had better linkage than my current IS.

Overall, I feel the current IS is comparable to the BMW, if only falling short in steering and the gearbox (manual), but definately better than the Audi A4 and Mercedes C-class. In the end driving is only part of the overall car ownership epxerience, and reliability and pricing always win out for me in the end.

Unless Lexus stop making the IS, I'll stick with this marque for life (or until German reliability improves!)

The issue with the IS is it wasn't a completely vanilla design, but one that was based on the chassis of the GS. While the GS is a competent car, shortening the chassis isn't going to create a performance leading winner in its class right away. The next generation IS might diverge from that direction, which I see as a good thing. Considering that Toyota has deep pockets, this shouldn't be an issue.

The current IS is better than almost every other car in its class in terms of creature comforts and feature. Both the C and A4 are pretty dated designs, with the former coming in with different skins & bones later this year. Performance leader it's not, and the 250 will need a little hp nudge soon.

I personally think the new C-class looks good. But then...once again....it's not a Lexus.
