Question Text Feature On Standard Lexus Is350 Radio

Is there a way to have the text feature scroll on it's own the radio station name and song name without me tapping the text button? My 4Runner does this on it's own.

Unfortunately, no.

Only on the non-nav cars. On cars with nav, it's a virtual button on the touchscreen (after pressing the audio button) with a different name (MSG, if I recall correctly).

Ah, thanks. I thought maybe they shorted me one button. I never got much data out of my MSG 'button' the one time I messed with it, while using the FM. There's also a virtual 'traffic' (or data?) button, but it does nothing on any FM station here in the sticks.

It's weird because one of my presets will always scroll the name and song title but none of the others will unless I first play that preset for a while and then switch to another station.

That is weird. Let us know if you figure out how it works.

I assume this is on the nav screen?

Yep, the text works on my NAV as well, automatically. I had my battery disconnected and had to reprogram the stations and now the ones that support text work.

Depends on the radio station. Some broadcast this feature, but most don't.

The 'TEXT' button on the Audio screen menu really comes into its own with XM radio as it ALWAYS will tell you the song and artist. My wife and I will be driving and listening to the 60's or 70's channel and a song will come on that we haven't heard in years. Sometimes we can guess what it is, but if we don't know it is easy to find out.

The technology that enables this on FM is called RDS. A few years ago, the broadcasters that supported RDS did little more than put out their station name and program type. But as radio stations computerized (replacing cart machines and CD players with music servers and automation software), they were able to send out the song title and artist in the RDS text field. In this radio market (central NJ/NYC/Philadelphia), RDS is very popular.

Some of our stations even put out the weather information!

To the original poster... I moved from a 2002 Camry XLE to a 2006 IS-250 and was WAY disappointed by the TEXT "feature" on the IS worked.

The Camry's JBL Audio scrolled the text automatically, the Lexus... well we all know how the Lexus handles this.

It really sucks too because all of the radio stations that I listen to in Houston broadcast the RDS song information.

You would think the higher end brand vehicle would have the auto scrolling feature! I really don't understand their thinking!

You need look no further than the bluetooth caller-id on nav equipped cars that blanks out when the car is in motion to understand their thinking: their lawyers are crapping bricks worrying that someone will get into an accident and sue them because of the distraction.
