At 4000 miles I switched to 5/30 Royal Purple, I jack the car up on the left
side during the change to ensure that all oil is drained. After all the oil has
drained with the drain plug out, I pour 1/4 to 1/2 quart of 5/30 Mobil 1
synthetic in and let it drain to rinse any contaminents that may have
gathered around the oil pan drain hole. While thats draining I break the used
filter element apart fin by fin checking for any aluminium fragments.
Then I button him up and fill him with 7 1/2 qts of Royal purple.

My personal preference has always been 10w-30 synthetic since it needs no VI modifiers to meet the specs. No VI modifiers means the oil lasts inherently longer in service because you don't have long chain polymers getting cracked and the oil losing visocosity. Still, I'm following the recommendations during warranty for sure, so 5W-20 it is for now.
I'm sure Pennzoil is a decent oil, but Mobil 1 has been doing this for a very long time and I have a lot of experience with it (and Red Line) so I'm pretty much set on those two. RP and Amsoil also make excellent products, they're just harder to find in Wal Mart than Mobil 1.

Why use 5W-20 just because of the warranty? I seriously doubt Lexus could void a warranty claim because of using the oil recommended in the paper manual. I haven't received any notices in my mailbox from Lexus about the change, so I feel totally justified in using 10W-30 if I want to.

Bakpack,
It seems a little strange to use Mobil 1 to rinse out the last tiny bit of old Royal Purple when it will wind up leaving an equal amount of Mobil 1 in there. Mobil 1 will have different additives and detergents that may not mix as well with Royal Purple as a tiny amount of old Royal Purple.
It seems like a better practice would be to just drain the oil when it is at normal operating temperature for a longer period of time. If you REALLY want to rinse out the old oil, why not use Royal Purple?

Can someone please tell me what the main benefits to using a full synthetic oil are, and also if you start using full synthetic can you switch back or do you have to continue to use it from there on?

the only extra syn 5/30 that I had. After this most recent oil change I have
extra 1/2 qt of RP that I plan to use as a "final rinse" next change.

According to the manual, you'll have a quart of oil left in the engine after any draining. So no matter how you slice it, you're mixing oils. The rinse is only to make you feel good, it's not doing much for cleaning out anything.

Synthetic oil doesn't break down as quickly as conventional oil, so you don't have to change it as often. It is also supposed to handle high temps better, so it is better for "heavy duty" use. Even if you are a "regular Joe" driver, synthetic oil still makes financial sense because you can go twice as long between changes.
