[QUOTE=Joeb427;2919282]I use Amsoil and would not leave oil in more than a year.
Amsoil policy also.
Thanks, I didn't know that. I just changed over to this oil at 10K, or about 300 miles ago. I guess I'll switch it over after a year. Oh well, after I finish my case, maybe I'll switch over to the 7500 mile synthetic 5w-20 since I still have to switch the oil filter.

Because you are throwing away perfectly good oil. Click here for supporting evidence.
This is a noob question, but when you remove only the filter, wouldn't there be this mad rush of oil coming out since nothing has been drained yet?

3) In the US, the only Group IV PAO Synthetics that are available are 1) Mobil 1, 2) Amsoil (but not the Xl-7500), 3) Royal Purple, and 4) German Castrol 0w-30 (it has the red label and says on the back, "Made in Germany). Redline is a Group V PolyEster based oil. All other Castrol, Quaker State, Pennzoil, Valvoline "synthetics" are a Group III hydrocracked oil. It is debated how much better Group IV base oils are than group III, but generally they are considered better.

I was bored at work so I was reading the 2008 manual and it still says 5w-30 as the best choice for the vehicle....
Odd since I thought there was a TSIB released for 5w-20?

Just got my oil changed for my 10K went with Amsoil 5W30 (shop was out of mobil 5W20). I know lexus now recommends 5W20, but is there a big difference especially in a place that doesn't get too cold?

Must be something they recommend back east in the colder climates.
My dealer (Newport Lexus, Newport Beach, CA) tells me there is NO change in there oil recommendations. He checked and could not find any TSB on the subject. I looked at the caps (oil) on the showroom floor and all still state 5/30......

Dealer didn't look hard enough then-

5W20 has been the "offically" recommended oil since at least March 29, 2006.
Nobody seems to know why Lexus hasn't changed the printing on their oil caps though

Using the oil cap recommendation as a guide than this is what the TSIB notice says and I'm cutting and pasting here
NOTE:
The recommended viscosity grade for this oil differs according to vehicle model.
Use the recommended grade specified on the oil filler cap or in the Repair Manual
or Owner’s Manual for each vehicle.
Me? I'm sticking with my 5/30 full synthetic and moving on. I'm not cruising across the Mohave desert in 120 degree heat with a 5/20 oil. On the other hand if I lived in Minnesota I would definitely would use a 5/20 oil in the winter. JHMO
