Default Evaluating the Safety of the 2IS

As I get closer to purchasing the IS, I am finding myself doing plenty of research, and here's smoothing I wondered about.

The IIHS rates the IS highly in all categories (http://www.iihs.org/ratings/ratingsb...s.aspx?id=560), and even though all test results indicate that the Lexus IS is a safe vehicle, how safe is it in real-world situations? Many accidents dont simply involve hitting a barrier under ideal laboratory conditions at 40mph and stopping.

I've seen quite a few members regrettably post about partial/total losses of their cars, and just the fact that they are alive and well to post is a testament to the safety of the car, but how does it really stack up?

What have your experiences shown about the safety of the IS?

Thanks,
Yaro

Compared to other vehicles in its class, the IS is very safe, I would even go as far to say near the top. It represents the latest in saftey technology. Every accident I have seen with this car shows it does a great job at dispersing the energy from impact away from the passenger cabin. Unfortunatly, the car takes on extensive damage as a result, but this is a common trend with today's newer vehicles and is a price I am willing to pay when it comes to safety.

The occupants walked away from this head-on collision, must be really safe

Wow! That was an intense hit. Glad to hear they walked away. It does seem really safe.

But how does it compare against other vehicles. I mean if an IS crashed head-on with a Suburban, what would the outcome be?

With so many large vehicles on the road, it seems more like survival of the largest.

That is true with any overisived SUV then. Perhaps everyone is better off buying a SUV then? I would get a tank so that I would be indestructible... For similar cars in its class, the IS is safe and I would not worry if I was in the market for any of the cars in the IS class and chose the IS.
