im getting my second oil change at the dealer, but you really have to pick and choose what service you want done.

i was looking over the service for 10K and it basically the only thing that applied to the IS was road test. i know there were a couple of others, but they weren't anything major.

So if you don't take it to the dealer for routing maintenance (oil, fluids, tires, etc.) where do you take it? Quick Lube? A local, well respected, independent foreign car mechanic?

I'd take mine to the Toyota dealer but it's right next to the Lexus one. I think the two dealerships have an arrangement and Toyota won't do service on Lexus cars. "Lexus: Same service, Twice the cost"

I go to Toyota for oil changes since they're more convenient. I haven't gone to lexus for anything other than rattles.

If you only go for oil changes and warranty work, don't expext the dealer to help you out when your car goes 1 mile over the warranty.

Well, you can pretty much call it even, then. If there's a problem after warranty, odds are good that it will cost equal to or less than the cost of "recommended" service to that point.

I'll go to the dealer occasionally. I have been going to great Japanese Master Mechanic for the last 12+ years, and will stick with him for most of my maintence needs. He is so honest and trustworthy, that it would be hard to go to a dealer and wonder everytime if I'm getting scr*wed.

I always go to the dealer for service....I'm not mechanically inclined, nor do I have the time.

These days I wouldn't expect the dealer to help out 1 mile over the warranty. Call me jaded but there's been a huge shift over the past few years on how helpful car dealers are when it comes to end of warranty period.

Plus when my local Lexus dealer charges $560 for the 30k service with an alignment and I can go to my mechanic who used to work for them and has all of the Lexus certifications and he charges $100 for the same thing. Well saving $460 is definitely something I'd consider in the equation.
