Default Fatter tires on Stock Rims AWD

Can I put a fatter tires on the Stock wheels on the 07 AWD? stock 225/45/17 doesn't seem to protect the Rims that much. Can I go up to 235/45/17 or 245/45/17? I want it all the same size since the AWD is not staggered.

What do I loose? Comfort? handling, traction....Also, I live in the snow region so will it be bad for winter driving?

Thanks,

Here's a good calculator to see what would change:

as long as their are the same diameter front to back then it shouldn't be an issue. taller tires on one end of the car vs. the other will cause strain on the transfer case over time. remember also that narrower tires cut thru debris (ice, snow, water, etc) better than wider tires. you'll have better dry traction and the rear end will be planted more, but at the expense of losing bad weather traction.

they cant be off any more than 3% compared to the oe tire diameter for the speedo to still read accurate. thats the case with any car. however, a 3% difference is a lot when your talking drive train strain.

So, to keep the speedo as same as the OEM, I can get the 255/40/17 which is almost the same as the 225/45/17.

Will I have any rubbing in with this 255/40/17? What is the size that many of you put in Fronts.

Thanks,

225/45-17's are 25.0" in diam, the 255/40-17's are also 25.0 in diam. Problem is the oe wheel is 8.0" wide, the 255's need at least an 8.5" wheel to fit properly. So that wont work unless you have a wider wheel out back to accomidate the tire. Really leaves you with a 245 out back but there's really no perf or visual advantage in only moving up 10 mm in the rear. I'd stick with what you have unless you plan on changing wheels also.

yeah for a 255 you would need at least an 8.5" wheel. 255 is a wider tire, might struggle a little with snow depending on what tires you purchase, however, since stock is 17x8, 255 will not fit unless you find a 8.5" wide wheel.

^^ only good for telling you what the next size is. wont verify the size will physically fit the car or wheel properly.
