Default Confused about HID Posts on here (Sorry, I have searched....I swear!)

I am a bit confused about the posts on here talking about replacing bulbs on HID lights.

is everyone talking about replacing the bulbs in the original HID housings, or aftermarket ones?

are the stock HID lights with Adaptive lighting not bright enough?

just so i'm clear on this as well...there are 3 lights that our Lexus's offer:
Non-HID
HID
HID with Adaptive Lighting

is everyone changing bulbs in all of the above?

The 2IS only comes in two forms. Halogen lowbeams, or HID with AFS.

When people is talking about changing the "stock" HID, their upgrading them mainly for color. The higher you go in the Kelvin rating the less light output you get. It's really for aesthetic reasons. The original HID's are bright enough, but it looks dull compared to other factory HID equipped cars (i.e. TSX, S2000, ES350, RX350).

For IS owners with Halogen lowbeams, they replace the stock bulbs with a HID Conversion kit, that includes ballasts to ignite the HID, etc.

They are replacing the whole HID kit. You can also just changes the bulbs if you want the light ouput to be different color.

If you only have the stock Halogen bulbs, can you just change them to a bulb that is more blue in color?

sure, why not?

I had great success with RAZO bulbs....look great....you won't get as much lite output as HID, but the beam will be close to HID color!

I have HID on my 2007 IS and on my 2001 Mustang. I like the look of my Mustang HID's (6500k) over the IS. Is there a direct replacement bulb for the IS I can get to get in that neighborhood?

no. the IS has projectors housings while your Mustang has reflector housings.

I continue to be confused by this as well...

My guess is that if you have stock HIDs from Lexus, and want a more Audi/Acura output, you can bulb swap because you will still have the projector.

I would love to have a projetion out like the TSX or the TL does, but not sacrifice the loss of lenght of output...

ALL stock HID's are rated at 4300K. whether its projector or reflector-based. for arguments sake... this means that all the bulbs are the same. the difference in color comes from the way the projector itself is designed and what not.

That's true, the projector orb has alot to do with the "color" outcome of the HID.

For some reason, us 2IS owners got shafted in this department. Even the ES350 got some beautiful projectors with a nice sharp cutoff.

Do you know which type of halogen bulb we need?

With that being said, what are the probable chances of retrofitting the projector/bulb combination from an ES or RX into the IS??
