I've been down the "protective molding" route many times and invariably lost. The dings as they came (and they ALWAYS came) were above, below or beside the molding. Still I do everything I can to minimize them.
That's kind of like saying ... "my keys are always in the last place I look!" ... of course they are, why would you keep looking for the keys after you've found them?
Point is ... if you have moldings, then the ONLY places you can get dings is where the moldings aren't. I think they do the most good in the garage at home when your wife gets in or out of her car 2 feet away multiple times each day.
FYI, when I bought my IS in June of last year, Lexus did not offer a OEM body side molding. Since then, they now offer a BSM for the ES, but not the IS. I would be very wary of anyone selling a BSM for the IS, since I believe it would just be a modified BSM for an ES, and may not be a perfect paint match for the IS . . .
I had OEM Lexus ES350 body side moldings installed on my 07 IS350. They are SGM and match my SGM exactly. They look as though they were designed for the car and they break up the unattractive slab sided look...they look good...have had lots of positive comments.
well said, ugly... the molding devalues the appearence of the lexy. I dont have dents dings watsoever caz I always park my car far away from others! or if I have friends, park together and reduce the chance of getting DING!

That is funny.
My point re: moldings...........No moldings for me. No sir. On the IS I think they just ruin the looks of the car. JMO.

Several steps I've found good for reducing door dings.
Don't park on inclines; only flat surfaces.
And if you have to park on an incline, get the end space at the top of the hill.
Don't park next to coupes, or beat up old dirty cars.
I look for short doors and light doors. Like you say, no coupes. But I'd sooner park next to a beat up old Tercel (with short flyweight doors) than a brand new Caddy DTS (with heavy doors that could double as battering rams). Young children don't care if they're in a nice car or a beater, they'll fling the door open without a thought.
