It's just so wierd how the first two gears on the automatics shift soooo darn fast. I really like a longer shift and let that RPM climb up in the auto mode without having to shift. Maybe it is about saving gas.............
They probably left the O/D button out on these cars because we can slide the shifter to the left and choose the highest gear.

The car was designed to get to 6th as fast as possible for fuel savings, but I find the transmission in this car to be fantastic. It changes gears very fast - much faster than I could row my own if I had a 6 speed manual.

With modern transmissions, manual trannys are becoming WAY overrated, IMO. They're fun, but you'd have to be a damn good driver to realize any performance gains these days.

You can view what gear the tranny is in by looking at a certain page in the information screen. Keep half of an eye on that when you are driving, and you will notice that the car favors the higher gears. This is because, as everyone has said, you get better gas mileage in a higher gear. Also, the engine is quieter with the lower RPMs.

When I had a 250 as a loaner, I had the transmission in auto at about 40 mph and the car was already in 6th gear. Hah! In the Vette I would just about be coming out of 2nd gear by 40 mph.

This is the job of the ECT-i transmission ECU. One of the reasons Toyota/Lexus can get away with making what is essentially a sealed transmission is because the shift logic is designed to reduce premature wear conditions as much as possible. It won't shift into 6th below a certain transmission oil temp or 41 mph. It won't go into 5th below a slightly lower temperature or 30-something mph. So in essence, when your car is cold, its a 4-speed, then as it heats up, it becomes a 6-speed.

Since our cars aren't torque monsters, the 6 speed very likely helps in acceleration versus hurting it. It definatly helps when going from a roll, as you will rarely be in a "bad gear"

6 gears means you don't need the torque to be as wide or as flat as you would with fewer gears. It also means you can design the engine for best efficiency over a narrower range of rpm to get good fuel economy. So you get to have your cake and eat it too. Better acceleration and peak power with better efficiency in your typical operation range.

This is the reason manual transmissions will go the way of the dinosaur at some point, or at least become obsolete for most applications. As more auto makers go to 6, 7, even 8 speed automatic transmissions, it becomes less and less efficient to have a 5 or 6 speed manual.

The M5 is a good example. It comes with a 7-speed SMG or 6-speed manual transmission. Guess which option results in quicker runs to 60 and 1/4 mile?

shifting is smoother also, if you have less gears each shift is to a more different gear ratio and it wont feel as smooth, with more gears the gear ratios dont change as much with each shift

hahaha....totally agreed!

6MT is more fun than i expected !

But the sport shift kind of does the same thing, just without the clutch. I notice the auto shifts through each gear at around 2500 RPM on average for me. When I shift manually, the car really goes fast. I tend to shift not too aggressively, like around 3500RPM-4000RPM. I can get a good jump on most cars by doing that. I beat a Honda Civic at an intersection. Or does that not even count at all?

When I went to the product knowledge class better fuel consumption was it.. Aside from that, Lexus is looking to get away from MT... Don't now if it will happen...

There's a conundrum for you. They tell you they put a lot of gear ratios in the box to save gas, but still use a torque converter which is inherently inefficient compared to a manual. Sounds like they're talking out of both sides of their mouths.
