Default Why a 6-speed transmission?

It seems like the 6-speed hinders performance because it has more gears to shift through. I've driven 4-speed, 5-speeds before and were pretty quick as well. Plus, 1st/2nd gear never shifted that fast as compares to the IS.

So what are the advantages of 6-speed?

Closer gear spacing for better acceleration, and of course, fuel mileage.

Who cares! We have essentially 4.10's as our final drive gear.

Okay so that really isn't all that important, but even with 6 gears Toyota was kinda enough to give us a tall axle ratio. Helps us out with those stock Mustang GTs.

........................ 06 G35 IS350
Axle Ratio........... 3.54:1 vs 4.08:1

07 Mustang V-8 5 Sp ratio 3.55:1

Could a five speed in effect have 4.10:1?

besides the fact that this is my first car and I've always wanted to learn how to drive a manual transmission, was gas. other than that driving a manual is a lot better than auto, you get a better feel for your car and it keeps you from doing stupid things when you multitask.

i think that a manual transmission simply gives the enthusiast drivers such as us a more 'in control' feeling of our vehicle.
with a 6 speed it further enforces this idea.

--we tell it when it shifts, instead of the machine working for us. some people (me) prefer this control and it makes the driving expeience 1000 times better and (more exciting/fun) than the same vehicle with an automatic transmission.

plus, automatic transmissions are almost unheard of in mountainous regions for a reason. this manual option can target those hilly markets.

why a 6 instead of a 5? everyone else is dead on. gas savings and more gearing (for more control).

The sixth is over drive. A real close ratio transmission is more like this one in the '94 M5:

4.23:1, 2.51:1, 1.57:1, 1.23:1, 1.00:1, 0.83:1

But, the final drive of the M5 was a 3.23 vs. 4.02 in the IS so someone has to do the math. They may be about equivalent. If you have the cash you can have a shop do whatever you want. To me, all you need is close ratio through those first 5 gears and then overdrive for gas. My older M5 has a 3.91 final and a 0.83.1 fifth gear so it is pretty high revs on the freeway--but it will do 165+ (7000+ rpm).

The new 6 speeds in cars are allowing you to have that close ratio performance with some economy when cruising.

Where did you get 4.02? I got 4.08s.. and lets just round that up to 4.10s muah.

Gearing on an IS350.

1st. 3.52
2nd. 2.04
3rd. 1.40
4th. 1.00
5th. 0.72
6th. 0.59

Final drive ratio which is 4.083

I wonder why the O/D button wasn't put on the lever so you can manually engage it like on most vehicles. The transmission probably gets really hot driving in the city when using auto. Imagine stopping and going while shifting through all 6 gears, then stop minutes later. Whew, hope cooling is efficient to prevent premature breakdown.

It's just so wierd how the first two gears on the automatics shift soooo darn fast. I really like a longer shift and let that RPM climb up in the auto mode without having to shift. Maybe it is about saving gas.............

You'll be amazed how some determined people willl still hold the steering wheel with their left knee while keeping the car in constant 3rd gear just so they can eat/drink/smoke/put make up on even with a manual!

so true, I have to admit that I used to hold the steering wheel with my left knee when I used to have my 6spd Acura. I'm so glad I got an auto now
