Default Local vs Highway mpg

I reset my avg mpg and proceed onto a highway for about an hour and a half. I maintained 50 MPH and after I arrived at my destination I saw that my avg mpg shows 35.4mpg . I was amazed this is my 3rd tank and I can get some nice result like that yet I am depressed because I am getting REALLY ****ty on local even though Lexus claims its around 22 mpg in the city and I am getting about 11 mpg which is half of what they claim... Any thoughs?

You live in NY so your probably in a lot of stop and go traffic. Here in L.A., I get 16mpg city - and that's when traffic is low. I get about 13-14 avg, and I don't have a lead foot either.

How do you reset the average mpg? I haven't been able to figure it out yet.

yea, for city driving, I average something like 17 mpg. But on the freeway, if I'm driving 65mph, I can get 30-31mpg. At 80mph, I average more like 25-27mpg. If only there were no stop lights or stop signs...

Uh, move further away so you can take a long freeway into town?

Yeah, city driving is brutal for our MPG and brakes.

One thing to consider also though, is if you keep resetting your MPG, you never give it a chance to reach a steady state... so even idle time starts dragging down your MPG more than it should. Let your MPG meter run for longer bits of time, because your true mileage over all your driving is what you should ultimately care about anyway.

Ya I reset it just to see what MPG I can get on a freeway hitting 50MPH, the result was nice no doubt about that. 35.4 is gonna drop hardcore when I start city driving again lol... oh well...
