You wont gain much HP, and yes the sound changes. If you leave the stock mufflers on you wont notice anything. Once you put a hi flow muffler on you will def. hear a change.

The stock mufflers really really do a good job of muffling.

I gotta recommend Hks. I had them on my 03 GS300 and it was the such a deep aggressive sound. At Idle it would just growl really low and when accelerating it was mean and deep. I bet it sounds just as good on the IS, I am considering them for mine. Too bad the ones I had on my GS wont fit the IS.

Not to be a wet blanket here, but isn't tampering with the catalytic converter against the law, i.e. a Federal or state crime? Just because we can break the law it doesn't always make a lot of sense to do so. There are other ways to get more hp and still stay within the law. Why not approach it from that angle? Correct me if I'm wrong about fooling around with the catalytic converter.

I realize the poster is from Iceland, but even there I suspect it is against the law.

Do they ever check for CATs when you go get your inspection sticker? I'm curious. Never seen it happen where I am, I imagine in CA they might though?

My home state of Florida doesn't even have emissions, but even with no precats and one Magnaflow cat I still pass down here (where it is tough given the effects of high elevation).

Removing the cat can sometimes give a nasty rasp. I have a few track buddies who do this and it sounds like a fart gone bad.

They don't crawl underneath to look, but many jurisdictions do an emissions test. I would assume the lack of a functioning cat would be apparent.

But that misses the point, why do we think it is OK to remove a piece of equipment that is supposed to be there by law? Why not drive without a license, or insurance, or remove the seatbelts, or not use a child seat? Where is the responsibility to sometimes just be a 'good scout' and obey the law?

Just stick a 3-way high flow cat on there. You really have to have some way high boost to take advantage of a no cat.

Everytime I've done a smog check, they always take a peak and make sure the cats are there.

Batman your answers to your questions are all right here in this thread along with sound clips. I just added some new sound clips last night.

Yes you boys in CA have very strict inspections. Here in TX they just hook it up to the computer. IF you pass, then you pass. Removing 2nd set of cats doesn't throw up in error on your ecu so everything should pass.
