From reading all the posts about the navi, I know you can only enter destination or use the phone only via voice commands. Is there another way to activate the voice command besides the button on the steering wheel?

Most of the time while I'm driving my wife would want to search for a destination or POI or call someone. She can't do it while the car's moving and only when I press the voice command button. And as some of you have mentioned, the voice recognition is not great. Sometimes we just give up using it. It's so much faster/easier doing it from the menu on the navi and we don't have to memorize the voice commands (which is nowhere in the manual!).

I know it's a safety issue, but doesn't Lexus know that sometimes passengers would want to use the features in the car? It's placed in the middle of the console but when the car moves, it's only controlled by the driver. What's next, it won't let you load a CD while the car is moving (sorry just frustration)? We have a garmin nuvi and loves that it doesn't "lock up" while car is in motion.

We love the car otherwise and just want to see if there are ways to make the navi easier for us to use.

It's a thread discussing the "safety" features that Lexus has that are ridiculous and make certain options we paid for useless while the car is moving.

I feel your pain... The only thing you can do is hack the nav one of two ways:

1) Add a switch that cuts the speed signal going to the nav so that when the car is moving and your wife wants to enter destinations, she can flip the switch, then flip it back once she's done.

2) Get a copy of the V5.1 (2006) nav DVD that has the destination override software command and make a hybrid DVD. (Do a search, there are many threads on the forum about this, especially in the 3rd gen GS forum)

Did u get the old software or a hybrid? Where did you get it?

You have to own it to make a hybrid. Try ebay? Search for "Lexus 5.1"
