Default How does the car calculate "Approx Mile"?

How does the car calculate the approx mile left for the car? If the culculation is close to it then I am totally screwed, I got a half + a half bar (figure below) of my gas and it shows 168mile which is EXTREMELY low

|----|------|------|----| (full)
---------------| (here)

currently my avg mpg is 23.6 and it keeps on dropping when I drive local.

I REALLY FUKED UP MY BRAKE IN PERIOD!!!

i think it calculates your avg mpg times the amount of gallons you have left? i could be wrong.

Our tank capacity is 17.1 am I correct? I read somewhere and it says 15, but on Lexus's website it says 17.1.

If they are doing avg mpg x amount of gallons left I should have more than 168

seems to me everytime i fill up my tank, i get the same range readout. if that is true, it cannot be using avg mpg.

dude, you're too obsessed over your gas mileage.

I think you're the guy that drives 1 mile trips in the winter right?

Your mileage will get up to normal when you get some real drives in the car.

This is common knowledge. City driving=poor mileage. Bad on brakes too.

Enjoy your car while you have it. If you really are concerned over mpg, this car is not for you and you should try getting more eco friendly cars; like a prius or a honda fit.

well, i didn't mean to come down on the OP for caring about gas mileage, as I tend to care a lot about it too. However, I've noticed several threads from him already asking why his gas mileage sucks, and there's really no answer except that city driving and short trips are not good...

It's coming off like he suspects that he has a defective car that is eating gas, but nobody is saying that to him and that he's trying to get as many data points as possible to prove to himself (or somebody else) that somehow he has a more thirsty car than everybody else's IS....

Chances are is that his engine is within specs and it's his driving routine that's the issue.

I have never, ever, ever seen my miles to empty go up from where it started and i always increase my mpg at least once a day (even if it's .1 when drivign on the highway for 10 minutes). From what i see, it just slows down the speed it decreases the mileage. For example, if i just filled up and am driving on the highway, instead of dropping a mile at the mile point, it'll hang there for a bit longer and drop after maybe 1.5 miles. Likewise, if i'm driving aggressively on local roads, the mile drop will happen quicker.

I could be wrong, but it seems it works that way to me.
