Negotiate Everything at the Dealership

That is very true. A good service advisor is your best friend at the dealerships. I went to the toyota dealership near me a while back and the service was incredible. They were real nice, and they gave me an estimate of the costs and looked up the actual cost of evrything. All nicely instead of trying to throw me off with extra things that I SHOULD do along with it. I shouldnt have gotten upset yesterday, and I'm sorry i blew up over it. I just hate "preying".

I get what people are saying about standard book time, but is that really legal? Why is it that a lawyer, or other profession can't over bill his client for hours worked but a mechanic shop or dealership can? How can it be legal in one profession and illegal in another? I myself would be okay paying the book time even if it took a shorter time, just as long as I still pay the book time if it took longer. However, I'm just wondering why there are such difference in applied law for different professions.

just too toss it out there, some business have a set labor rate with a minimum charged....
i know in the graphics business i have seen some shops charge a 50.00 an hour rate with a 1 hour minimum charge irregardless of what they are doing.
Not that i support a dealerships business practices i can see where the 1 hour comes from, i know in the autobody business they do this as well. They have set rates for specific tasks.
my suggestion is learn how to do simple moddifications such as installs of bodykits, wings, spoilers and other simple bolt on parts that way you dont have to risk the game playing at the dealer.

We charge based on an estimated time and a set rate. Depending on who performs the work sometimes it takes longer but i'm paying the guy less, sometimes my higher payed guys can get it done in half the time, it usually works out but even if the high priced guy takes twice as long or the lower paid guy does it faster I do not charge more or offer a refund. I'd imagine the same concept applies here, they have an estimate on the average time it takes to perform the work and a base rate.

What IS did you get?
What options, packages, accesories and "freebies" were included?
MSRP?
Invoice?
How much did you paid for it, OTD?
Did you pay with cash or finance (regular or leasing)?
If you finance, tell us the details including the interest rate?
More questions will come with your answers.

Just to pique everybody's curiosity, a rookie tech or T-10 student will make about $9 to $12/hr and flag between 30 and 60 hours a week. A seasoned Lexus Master Certified Technician will make over $14/hr and can flag anywhere from 60-150 hours in a week. Of course, this is all dependant on geographics.

You couldn't get me to open my toolbox for that kind of money. In my area most dealerships top out at $23-$27 an hour that they pay their techs...that's why I will never work at a dealership, unless you are willing to literally kill yourself or are comfortable doing meaningless(although necessary) maintenance work it's just not worth the politics and the BS that you have to put up with for that little amount of money.

I'm not a tech or mechanic, but I have to agree with the pay. In fact, I expect a seasoned Lexus or high end dealership tech to make more than that. Back in 1990-91 when I was just out of High School I worked in the service department at a Honda dealership. Yes, the new techs did make a lot less, but the seasoned master techs all made over $20/hour and around $25. This was a Honda dealership back in the early 90s. Today I'd expect a master tech to make around $30/hour at least. Lot's of them make over $100K a year easy and that is more than I can say I make
